Liverpool manager Arne Slot has provided a frank explanation for his controversial decision to leave star forward Mohamed Salah on the bench during the team's 2-0 Champions League quarter-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. The Egyptian international watched from the sidelines at the Parc des Princes as five teammates were introduced in the second half, with Slot admitting his side were in "survival mode" throughout the match.
Survival Mode Takes Priority
Goals from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave PSG a commanding advantage in the first leg of their European clash, leaving Liverpool with a mountain to climb in next week's return fixture at Anfield. Despite trailing by two goals, Slot opted against bringing Salah on as a substitute, instead introducing young midfielder Trey Nyoni alongside changes to Andy Robertson, Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones, and the returning Alexander Isak.
"In the last part of the game it was more about surviving than us having a chance to score," Slot revealed when questioned about Salah's absence from the pitch. "You never know, as last season we scored five minutes before the end through Harvey Elliott when I took Mo off. We had 20-25 minutes defending in the box, I think it's better to save his energy for the games coming up in the coming weeks."
Tactical Adjustments and Future Plans
The Liverpool boss also discussed his tactical approach, which saw him deploy a back five for the first time with a full senior squad during his tenure at the club. Slot pointed to PSG's formidable attacking threats, particularly the pace of full-backs Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes, as justification for the defensive setup.
"They have pace from everywhere all over the pitch, incredible pace," Slot explained. "Hakimi and Nuno Mendes are an unbelievable threat apart from all the others, so we played them with Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. That was the thinking behind it. In that way, I thought we could try to press them really high and aggressive."
However, the manager conceded that PSG's quality ultimately overwhelmed his tactical plans, noting that attempts to press high often left Liverpool "completely ripped apart" with the French side creating numerous chances.
Looking Ahead to Anfield Return
Despite the comprehensive defeat in Paris, Slot expressed confidence that his team could produce a different performance in the second leg at Anfield. The Dutch manager suggested that Liverpool would revert to a more familiar approach for the home fixture, drawing parallels with their successful European performances from the previous season.
"I am convinced that we can show something different in less than a week's time," Slot asserted. "I am convinced we will play a much more similar game as we played last season at home."
The manager also addressed the intense scrutiny surrounding his tactical decisions, acknowledging that while systems and formations would be debated by pundits and fans, the fundamental story of the match was PSG's dominant display against numerous opponents who have tried various approaches at the Parc des Princes.
With Liverpool now facing an uphill battle to overturn the two-goal deficit in the return leg, Slot's decision to preserve Salah's energy for future challenges will continue to be analyzed as the Reds prepare for what promises to be a challenging conclusion to their European campaign.
