Thierry Henry Lauds Liverpool's Hugo Ekitike as Unexpected Standout
Thierry Henry has highlighted Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike as a player who has genuinely surprised him this season, asserting that the Frenchman deserves "a lot of credit" for his contributions. Despite Liverpool's largely unsuccessful defence of their Premier League title, Henry believes Ekitike has thrived in challenging circumstances.
Ekitike's Impact Outshines Costlier Signings
Ekitike was one of three high-profile arrivals at Anfield last summer, joining in a £79 million deal from Eintracht Frankfurt. While Liverpool invested more heavily in Florian Wirtz (£116 million from Bayer Leverkusen) and Alexander Isak (£125 million from Newcastle United), it is Ekitike who has delivered the most impressive returns. The 23-year-old has notched 17 goals and six assists across 42 appearances in all competitions, flourishing in his new environment.
Speaking to Betway, Henry emphasised Ekitike's unexpected rise: "The guy did it already – it's Ekitike. It happened earlier, and nobody saw it coming. You have to give him a lot of credit for making the jump, doing what he did at Liverpool and breaking through into this squad. But it's going to be a battle."
Salah's Departure Looms Large for Liverpool
Despite Ekitike's form, Liverpool face a significant void this summer with Mohamed Salah confirming his departure. The Egyptian forward announced via social media that this season will be his last at Anfield, despite signing a contract extension last April that ran until 2027. In an emotional statement, Salah expressed gratitude to the club and fans, noting Liverpool's profound impact on his life.
His exit has sparked speculation about potential replacements, with players like Nico Williams, Yan Diomande, Francisco Conceicao, and Harry Wilson linked to a move to Merseyside.
Liverpool's Focus on Season Finish
For now, Liverpool's attention remains on securing a strong Premier League finish, as their title hopes have faded. At the time of writing, they sit fifth in the table, 21 points behind leaders Arsenal with only seven matches remaining. Upcoming fixtures include an FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City on April 4, a Champions League last-eight clash with Paris Saint-Germain on April 8, and a Premier League meeting with Fulham on April 11.
Henry also noted the competitive nature of squad selection, referencing Warren Zaire-Emery's promotion from the Under-21s as an example of opportunities arising. "Nobody thought eight months ago that Ekitike would be in this squad, so there's always a chance for someone to break in," he added, underscoring the dynamic environment at Liverpool.
