Tiger Woods Withdraws from Ryder Cup Captaincy After DUI Arrest
Tiger Woods has officially withdrawn himself from consideration for the role of United States Ryder Cup captain for the 2027 event at Adare Manor in Ireland. This decision comes in the wake of his arrest last week for driving under the influence following a car accident, marking a significant setback for the PGA of America's plans.
Woods, aged 50, had been widely regarded as the preferred candidate to lead the American team as they aim to reclaim the biennial prize after a heavy defeat at Bethpage Black last year. However, he has chosen to step away from golf to focus on his health and well-being, further narrowing the options to succeed Keegan Bradley.
Search for a New Captain Intensifies
While Europe enjoys stability under Luke Donald, who is targeting a third consecutive Ryder Cup victory, the identity of the United States captain remains uncertain. A reprisal of Bradley's role seems unlikely given the disastrous outcome in New York, leaving an intriguing array of potential candidates to take the helm.
Here are five names who could be in contention to captain the United States in 2027:
Steve Stricker
Steve Stricker emerges as a strong contender, having previously captained the United States to a dominant victory at Whistling Straits in 2021. Well-liked by players, many of whom could return for the trip to Ireland, Stricker's experience and popularity make him a viable choice, despite the greater challenge of an away event compared to the Covid-restricted home win.
Stewart Cink
Stewart Cink, a five-time Ryder Cup player with one win, brings calmness and clout to the table. A popular figure, though controversial for denying Tom Watson at Turnberry in 2009, Cink has expressed interest in the captaincy. His current success on the Seniors Tour demonstrates a competitive edge that could translate well into leadership.
Brandt Snedeker
Brandt Snedeker, who served as a vice-captain under Bradley last year and will lead the United States at the Presidents Cup in September, is perhaps the favourite for the role. While it's uncommon to transition directly to Ryder Cup duties, Snedeker's involvement and playing form, as seen at the Valspar Championship, position him well, though his PGA Tour commitments could pose a challenge.
Webb Simpson
Webb Simpson, another of Bradley's vice-captains, might be considered too soon for the top role, but his wisdom and experience on the PGA Tour player board add to his credentials. Among other vice-captains, Kevin Kisner is focusing on media, Jim Furyk's time may have passed, and Gary Woodland aims to play after his Houston Open win.
Justin Leonard
Justin Leonard, though less connected to current Tour players, has significant backing due to his legacy, including the memorable winning putt at the 'Battle of Brookline' in 1999. Brandel Chamblee has endorsed Leonard, praising his class and thoughtfulness, comparing him to successful European captain Paul McGinley.
The PGA of America now faces a critical decision as they evaluate these candidates to lead the United States in their quest to overturn Europe's dominance at Adare Manor.
