Tottenham Hotspur Edge Closer to Roberto De Zerbi Appointment
Roberto De Zerbi is on the verge of being appointed as the new head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, with discussions between the club and the Italian manager reportedly reaching an advanced stage. This development comes swiftly after the departure of interim boss Igor Tudor, who left the role on Sunday following a disastrous seven-game spell.
De Zerbi's Shift in Stance and Contract Details
Initially, the former Brighton and Hove Albion manager had expressed a preference to wait until the summer before making any career decisions, allowing him to assess his options more thoroughly. However, in a significant reversal, De Zerbi now appears ready to accept Tottenham's offer immediately. Reports from Italy indicate that he is willing to engage with Spurs, who have tabled a substantial five-year contract proposal.
Should the deal be finalised, the 46-year-old would become Tottenham's fourth head coach in just ten months, highlighting the club's ongoing instability and managerial turmoil. De Zerbi has been a persistent name linked with the Spurs vacancy, first emerging as a candidate in 2023 and again more recently after Thomas Frank's exit on 11 February. Following his departure from Marseille, a sabbatical until the season's end had been anticipated, but Tottenham's urgent situation has prompted a change of heart.
Tudor's Brief and Disastrous Reign
The club's decision to turn to De Zerbi follows the shambolic 44-day reign of Igor Tudor, which yielded five defeats in seven matches. Tudor's tenure was marred by a catalogue of questionable tactical choices and only served to heighten the realistic threat of Tottenham suffering their first relegation since 1977. This dire scenario forced Spurs into one final roll of the dice in their search for managerial stability.
With fans' favourite Mauricio Pochettino committed to leading the United States at this summer's World Cup, De Zerbi has emerged as the best and most viable candidate currently available on the market. Pochettino himself addressed speculation on Monday, confirming no contact from Tottenham or Real Madrid and reiterating his full focus on the national team.
Timeline and Fan Concerns
Tottenham had expected to appoint a new head coach by the middle of this week, providing approximately ten days of preparation ahead of the crucial Premier League trip to Sunderland on April 12. That timeline now appears set to be met with De Zerbi's anticipated arrival.
However, the appointment is not without controversy. Three prominent Tottenham supporters groups – Proud Lilywhites, Women of the Lane, and Spurs Reach – issued statements on Friday calling for De Zerbi not to be hired. Their concerns stem from the manager's past comments regarding Marseille forward Mason Greenwood.
In November, while managing Marseille, De Zerbi described Greenwood as a "good guy" and expressed sadness over the events in the player's life, stating he knew "a totally different person than the one who was described." Greenwood had faced serious charges in 2022, which were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023 due to withdrawn witnesses and new evidence, after which he resumed his career with Marseille in 2024.
As Tottenham move to secure De Zerbi's services, the club faces the dual challenge of navigating fan dissent while urgently addressing their precarious league position to avoid a historic relegation.
