Tottenham Confirm Roberto De Zerbi as New Manager in Crisis Move
Crisis-ridden Tottenham Hotspur have officially announced the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager, making him the third boss to take charge at the club this season alone. The Italian coach, aged 46, has signed a long-term contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the immediate priority of keeping the team in the Premier League.
Spurs' Dire Situation and Managerial Turmoil
Currently languishing in 17th place in the Premier League table, Tottenham are just one point and one position above the relegation zone with only seven games remaining in the season. Their recent 3-0 home defeat to relegation rivals Nottingham Forest proved to be the final straw for interim manager Igor Tudor, who was dismissed after a brief reign of just 44 days. Tudor managed only one point from his five Premier League matches, although he did secure a victory in the Champions League.
De Zerbi's appointment follows a rapid managerial turnover at Spurs, with this being the fourth change in less than a year. Thomas Frank replaced Ange Postecoglou last summer but lasted only eight months before being replaced. The club has yet to win a Premier League game in 2026, and their next match is scheduled for April 12 away to Sunderland.
De Zerbi's Background and Immediate Challenges
Roberto De Zerbi brings a wealth of experience to Tottenham, having previously managed in the Premier League with Brighton, where he achieved the club's highest-ever top-flight finish and secured European qualification for the first time in their history. After leaving Brighton in 2024, he managed French giants Marseille before departing in February. He was also linked with the vacant managerial position at Manchester United.
In a statement, De Zerbi expressed his enthusiasm for the role, saying, "I am delighted to be joining this fantastic football club, which is one of the biggest and most prestigious in the world. In all my discussions with the Club’s leadership, their ambition for the future has been clear – to build a team capable of reaching great achievements, and to do that playing a style of football that excites and inspires our supporters." He emphasized that his short-term focus is on climbing the Premier League table.
Controversy and Fan Backlash
Despite his credentials, De Zerbi's appointment has not been without controversy. Last week, three Tottenham supporters' groups released statements urging the club not to hire him due to his past comments on Mason Greenwood. While managing Marseille, De Zerbi controversially signed the former England forward, who had been sold by Manchester United in 2024 after charges including attempted rape and assault were dropped. De Zerbi described Greenwood as a 'good guy' who had paid a 'heavy price.'
Sporting Director Johan Lange commented on the appointment, stating, "Roberto was our number one target for the summer and we are very pleased to be able to bring him in now. He is one of the most creative and forward-thinking coaches in world football, and brings with him a wealth of experience at the highest level, including in the Premier League."
The club acted swiftly to secure De Zerbi after Tudor's departure was announced on Sunday, convincing the Italian to take over immediately despite his initial preference to wait until the summer. As Tottenham face a critical period in their season, all eyes will be on whether De Zerbi can steer them away from relegation and begin to rebuild the team's fortunes.
