Paul Townend, the stable jockey for trainer Willie Mullins, has made a decisive choice for Saturday's prestigious Randox Grand National, opting to ride former winner I Am Maximus. Townend had the pick of Mullins's nine entries in the world-famous race and narrowed his options down to two strong contenders: I Am Maximus, who triumphed in 2024 and placed second last year behind Nick Rockett, and Grangeclare West, who finished third to complete a historic 1-2-3 for the Mullins stable in 2025.
Late Decision Amidst High Stakes
Townend revealed that he delayed his decision as long as possible, only committing on Wednesday when the final field was declared. He remained loyal to I Am Maximus in 2025 but has not ridden the horse in its three subsequent races. In contrast, he partnered Grangeclare West in February when that horse captured the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse, a race that has become a key indicator for Grand National success, having been won by subsequent champions Nick Rockett in 2025 and I Am Maximus in 2024.
Weighing the Options
Ultimately, Townend selected I Am Maximus, the top weight and big race favourite, leaving Patrick Mullins, who rode Nick Rockett to victory last year, to take over on Grangeclare West. In explaining his choice, Townend acknowledged Grangeclare West's strong chances following its Bobbyjo win but emphasized his confidence in I Am Maximus.
"Grangeclare West goes there with a massive chance following his win in the Bobbyjo, and I did give it plenty of thought, but I just couldn't leave I Am Maximus behind," Townend said. "He gave me one of my greatest days in the saddle here two years ago, and I think he goes there with a great chance of regaining his crown this year."
Ground Conditions and Strategy
Townend also highlighted the importance of ground conditions, expressing hope that Aintree will undertake significant watering before Saturday. "I'm hoping Aintree will do plenty of watering between now and Saturday, because it was probably just a touch quick for I Am Maximus last year," he noted. He added that cheekpieces should aid the horse regardless of the ground, and its prior experience is a key advantage. "He's been there and done it before, and I think he can do it again."
This decision sets the stage for a thrilling race, with Townend banking on I Am Maximus's proven track record and resilience to secure another Grand National victory.
