England manager Thomas Tuchel has openly acknowledged that the simultaneous withdrawal of eleven Arsenal players from international duty appears "suspicious," yet he maintains unwavering confidence in the integrity of his squad members. The situation has sparked debate as Arsenal navigate a congested fixture schedule while competing on multiple fronts.
Arsenal Quartet Withdraw from England Duty
Four England internationals from Arsenal—Eberechi Eze, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and Noni Madueke—are among the eleven Gunners who have pulled out of international commitments. Eze withdrew prior to Friday's 1-1 draw against Uruguay, while Madueke limped off during that match and has since returned to his club. Rice and Saka arrived at camp on Saturday but were sent back to Arsenal following medical assessments.
Complete List of Arsenal Withdrawals
These England stars join a broader group of Arsenal players who have withdrawn, including Martin Odegaard, Leandro Trossard, William Saliba, Gabriel, Jurrien Tumber, Piero Hancapie, and Martin Zubimendi. This mass exodus coincides with a critical period for Arsenal, who are pursuing their first Premier League title in over two decades and remain active in three competitions.
Tuchel's Trust Amid Suspicion
Speaking ahead of England's friendly against Japan, Tuchel addressed the optics of the situation. "Everyone can do the math and it's a lot of players, of course," he stated. "During the situation, it looks a bit suspicious but I can only talk for our players. I still have 100% trust in the honesty of Bukayo and Declan. We did medical tests. I saw them. I have no reason to believe that Declan is not honest with me. I have no reason to believe Bukayo is not honest."
He added, "But given the amount of Arsenal players, I understand the look." Tuchel emphasized that the injured players demonstrated commitment by remaining with the England squad for treatment and camaraderie, rather than departing immediately.
Injury Updates and Fixture Pressure
Tuchel provided specific insights into the players' conditions. Madueke's injury is particularly concerning, with the manager noting he "is out for some days and maybe some weeks." Regarding Rice and Saka, Tuchel explained, "Declan feels a discomfort since quite a while, and he’s playing through it, and he’s just now on the edge. It’s the same with Bukayo. He played in pain through the Carabao final and we could see that he had not the same impact that he wishes to have for his club against Man City."
Arsenal's fixture congestion is notable. They hold a nine-point lead over Manchester City in the Premier League, though City have a game in hand and a pending match at the Emirates. Additionally, Arsenal face Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals and a two-legged Champions League quarter-final against Sporting Lisbon, raising questions about the timing of these withdrawals.
Context of Arsenal's Season
Arsenal's ambitions are high this season, aiming to end a prolonged trophy drought. Their title chase is intense, with Manchester City recently defeating them in the Carabao Cup final, dashing hopes of a quadruple. City, however, are already eliminated from the Champions League, adding another layer to the rivalry.
Tuchel concluded by affirming his support for the players, stating, "I’m not upset with the players, I’m not angry with the players. I got the feeling that everyone was desperate to come." He also mentioned that Jude Bellingham will miss the Japan friendly due to a hamstring issue, while Ben White may start after scoring in his international return.
The situation underscores the delicate balance between club and country commitments, especially during pivotal moments in the football calendar.
