England manager Thomas Tuchel has disclosed that captain Harry Kane's last-minute withdrawal from the friendly match against Japan stemmed from an injury that emerged unexpectedly. The Bayern Munich striker was a surprising absence from the squad at Wembley Stadium, with Tuchel confirming the issue arose during training sessions.
Minor Training Injury Sidelines Kane
Kane sustained what has been described as a minor injury while preparing for the pre-World Cup test fixture. Tuchel explained to ITV that the problem developed suddenly, forcing Kane to exit training after just fifteen minutes. The manager emphasised that the injury was serious enough to prevent any participation, even on the day of the match, with further medical assessments currently underway.
Precautionary Measure Amid Key Absences
This setback adds to England's injury concerns, following the recent withdrawals of Arsenal players Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka. Tuchel opted for a cautious approach, ruling Kane out as a precautionary step. The striker, who has netted an impressive 48 goals in 40 games this season, was among eleven players granted rest ahead of England's previous 1-1 draw with Uruguay.
Impact on Team Strategy and Future Fixtures
In Kane's absence, Phil Foden was positioned in the false nine role, offering the Manchester City attacker an opportunity to showcase his skills. Looking ahead, Kane aims to recover in time for Bayern Munich's crucial Champions League quarter-final clash against Real Madrid in April. Tuchel noted that Kane would be observing the Japan match from the stands, awaiting further evaluation on the severity of his condition.
