Thomas Tuchel Outlines Strict Condition for Max Dowman's World Cup Inclusion
England manager Thomas Tuchel has set a clear and strict condition for Arsenal's teenage sensation Max Dowman to secure a place in the national squad for the upcoming World Cup. Despite Dowman's remarkable recent achievements, Tuchel emphasised the necessity for the 16-year-old to accumulate more playing time at club level before being considered for international duty.
Dowman's Historic Achievement and Squad Omission
Max Dowman recently made Premier League history by becoming the youngest scorer ever at just 16 years and 73 days, netting a goal in Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Everton. This performance has cemented his status as one of English football's most exciting young prospects. However, Tuchel opted not to include Dowman in the 35-man squad for England's upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley on March 27 and 31, respectively.
Tuchel explained his decision, stating, "Why wouldn't I keep the door open? I keep the door open for anyone of any age. I learned as a coach not to take the final decision now." He acknowledged Dowman's impressive talent, describing him as a "game-changer" and a "fantastic and outstanding talent," but highlighted the importance of regular first-team football.
The Crucial Requirement: More Arsenal Minutes
The central issue, according to Tuchel, is Dowman's limited playing time at Arsenal this season, with only 43 minutes of Premier League action to his name. Tuchel pointed out that while Dowman's goal against Everton has thrust him into the spotlight, consistent club involvement is vital for World Cup selection.
"At the moment he's not a regular starter," Tuchel noted. "You could argue you should be maybe a starter at your club to be considered. Let him fight for his minutes. We take the last decision when we build the squad in May." He drew a cautious comparison to other young stars like Lamine Yamal and Lionel Messi, suggesting they had more club experience before breaking into their national teams.

Tuchel also expressed concern about the potential "crazy hype" surrounding Dowman, warning that it could ultimately be unhelpful. He stressed the need for careful and responsible management of the young player's development, praising Arsenal as an environment where teamwork is prioritised.
The England boss concluded, "At the moment, I think he's in a good place to fight for his position and his minutes at Arsenal, and we always have the chance to call maybe for the World Cup.
