A Valencia CF youth coach and three of his children have been confirmed dead after a tragic boating accident in Indonesia. The devastating incident occurred on Friday evening near the popular tourist destination of Padar Island.
Details of the Komodo National Park Tragedy
The tour boat, carrying a total of 11 people, capsized after suffering sudden engine failure. On board were the family of six of coach Fernando Martin, four crew members, and a local guide. The vessel was navigating the waters of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Komodo National Park when disaster struck.
Local authorities confirmed that Martin, along with two of his sons and one daughter, lost their lives. His wife and another daughter survived the ordeal and were rescued. The search and rescue operation, led by the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), faced significant challenges due to strong waves in the area, hampering efforts to locate all individuals swiftly.
Rescue Efforts and Ongoing Search
Search operations continued through the weekend for any other potential victims. Rescue workers were seen examining debris in the water on Sunday, 28 December 2025. The difficult conditions at the site, known for its strong currents and rugged beauty, complicated the mission.
The family was reportedly on a holiday tour of the famous Komodo National Park, home to the Komodo dragon. The precise cause of the engine failure is under investigation by Indonesian officials.
Community in Mourning
The news has sent shockwaves through the Valencia CF community and the wider football world. Fernando Martin was a respected figure within the club's youth setup. Tributes have begun to pour in for the coach and his young family.
This tragic event underscores the potential dangers of maritime tourism, even in world-renowned destinations. It serves as a sombre reminder of the power of nature and the importance of stringent safety measures for water-based excursions.
