Wright, himself a two-time world champion, speculated that younger players now hold an advantage due to superior vision. "I think their eyesight is better than ours," Wright stated. He then turned his focus to Van Gerwen, adding: "I think MVG's vision is probably going - but he won't admit it at the moment."
Van Gerwen, who is ranked world number three, was quick to dismiss the comments when informed of them. "There's nothing wrong with my eyes. Don't worry. I keep getting compliments," he asserted, making his position unequivocally clear.
