Van Gerwen Blasts Wright Over Eyesight Jibe Ahead of World Darts Showdown
Van Gerwen hits back at Wright over eyesight claim

Three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen has issued a sharp retort to rival Peter Wright, after 'Snakebite' suggested the Dutchman's eyesight might be on the decline.

Wright's Provocative Claim

The war of words erupted ahead of the World Darts Championship at London's Alexandra Palace. Wright, himself a two-time world champion, speculated that younger players now hold an advantage due to superior vision. "I think their eyesight is better than ours," Wright stated. He then turned his focus to Van Gerwen, adding: "I think MVG's vision is probably going - but he won't admit it at the moment."

Van Gerwen, who is ranked world number three, was quick to dismiss the comments when informed of them. "There's nothing wrong with my eyes. Don't worry. I keep getting compliments," he asserted, making his position unequivocally clear.

Survival and Setting the Stage

The exchange adds extra spice to the tournament, where both players are navigating their early rounds. Van Gerwen's campaign began with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Japanese debutant Mitsuhiko Tatsunami on Thursday evening. This win preserved his remarkable 14-year streak of never losing his opening match at the iconic venue.

Wright, currently ranked 30th, progressed after his German opponent, Arno Merk, caused an upset by beating Kim Huybrechts. The potential paths are now set for a major third-round encounter. Van Gerwen will next face either William O'Connor or Krzysztof Kciuk, while Wright meets qualifier Merk.

A Storied Rivalry Rekindled

Should both advance, a blockbuster clash after Christmas is guaranteed, rekindling one of the sport's most famous rivalries. Wright has already expressed his desire for the match-up, recalling their past battles. "Years ago, I used to play Michael van Gerwen at his peak, he was like the GOAT. And it was a privilege to play him in so many finals," Wright remarked. He added that he would need to find an extra gear and stated plainly: "I want to beat him."

Van Gerwen, however, appears unmoved by the mind games. Referencing their recent exhibition matches, 'Mighty Mike' delivered a final cutting remark. "I hope he has a big mouth like he had in the last two weeks because I keep smashing him in exhibitions... To speak the name of Peter Wright is a waste of my breath," he concluded, setting the stage for a potentially explosive meeting on the oche.
