Dutch darts sensation Gian van Veen is engaged in a determined race against time, striving to make a dramatic return to the Premier League stage in Berlin this Thursday. The World Championship runner-up recently underwent surgery to remove kidney stones, a procedure that forced him to miss last week's events in Dublin and a European Tour tournament in Belgium.
A Patient Recovery Process
Van Veen has openly discussed the challenges of his post-operative recovery, emphasising that patience has been a crucial yet difficult virtue to maintain. "Following the surgery to remove my kidney stones, recovery has been a process that requires patience," the athlete shared in a candid Instagram post. "Unfortunately, that is something that does not come easy when all you want to do is compete in this packed schedule."
Energy Levels and Daily Management
The physical toll of the surgery remains evident, with Van Veen reporting that his energy reserves are not yet where he had hoped. "However, the fatigue is real. My energy levels are still lower than I hoped and every day I have to be smart about how I use it," he explained. Despite this, his commitment to training has not wavered. "But where my body allows it, I am on the board. Practising, working and rebuilding on getting back to where I want to be."
Berlin as the Driving Goal
The prospect of competing in Berlin's Premier League event serves as a powerful motivator for Van Veen. "Berlin is the goal. Walking out onto that Premier League stage and making my comeback at the oche is what is driving me through every session, every day," he stated with clear determination. However, he remains pragmatic about his health, adding, "I am doing everything to be there this Thursday. However, I need to listen to my body and not rush into any decisions. As important as the Premier League is, my health is more important."
Unwavering Motivation Amidst Uncertainty
Van Veen's competitive spirit appears undimmed by his recent health setback. "The will is there. The motivation has definitely never left. Now it is about making sure everything aligns in time," he affirmed. His potential quarter-final match against Gerwyn Price adds significant stakes to his recovery timeline.
Premier League Berlin Line-Up
The Berlin event promises high-octane darts action regardless of Van Veen's participation. Luke Littler, fresh from securing a second nightly win in Dublin, is set to open against Stephen Bunting. Other notable matches include Jonny Clayton facing Josh Rock, who continues to seek his first victory, and a heavyweight clash between Luke Humphries and Michael van Gerwen.
Van Veen's situation underscores the intense physical and mental demands of professional darts, where athletes must balance relentless schedules with personal wellbeing. His journey back to the oche will be closely watched by fans and competitors alike as the Premier League caravan rolls into Berlin.
