Wimbledon to Introduce VAR-Style Video Review for 2026 Championships
The All England Club has confirmed that Wimbledon will introduce video review technology for the first time at this year's Championships, marking a significant shift in the tournament's officiating. This VAR-style system will be available on the six main show courts, including Centre Court and No 1 Court, allowing players to challenge umpire decisions on specific calls.
Expanding Technology in Tennis Officiating
Video reviews were introduced on the ATP Tour last year and have been available at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025. The technology enables players to challenge calls made by the umpire, such as whether a ball has bounced twice or if a player has touched the net during play. It can also apply to hindrance calls, as demonstrated at Indian Wells last week when Jack Draper was controversially adjudged to have raised his arms during a point, distracting his opponent Daniil Medvedev at a crucial stage of the second set.
Following Electronic Line Calling Implementation
The introduction of video reviews at Wimbledon comes after on-court line judges were replaced by electronic line calling last year. However, this system faced challenges, notably failing during the fourth-round match between Sonay Kartal and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, where an error was not called. In response to fan complaints about difficulty determining if a ball had landed in or out without on-court line judges, Wimbledon has confirmed it will introduce visual indicators to assist the electronic line calling system.
