Tiger Woods Released After Eight-Hour Police Custody Following DUI Arrest

Golf icon Tiger Woods has been released from Martin County Jail after spending eight hours in police custody following his arrest on DUI charges. The incident stemmed from a two-vehicle rollover collision that occurred near his Jupiter, Florida home in the early hours of Friday morning.

Details of the Crash and Arrest

The collision took place at approximately 2pm ET on Friday, when Woods was driving his Range Rover northbound along a two-lane road. According to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek, a pickup truck towing a pressure cleaner trailer began slowing to turn into a driveway, but Woods was traveling at a speed that prevented the truck from fully exiting the carriageway.

In a split-second attempt to overtake, the 15-time major champion struck the trailer, causing his vehicle to roll onto its side. Emergency services responded promptly to the scene, where DUI investigators observed Woods displaying signs of impairment and lethargy.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Woods was arrested and transported to Martin County Jail, where he faced two misdemeanor charges: driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a urinalysis test. Sheriff Budensiek clarified that Florida state law requires individuals arrested for DUI to be held for at least eight hours before release.

"There is a Florida state statute that requires us to keep people incarcerated for at least eight hours post a DUI arrest," Budensiek stated during a Friday press briefing. "So he's in our jail. He will be there for at least eight hours from 3 o'clock, and then he'll be released on bond if he posts bond."

Special Handling and Safety Measures

Due to Woods' high-profile status, authorities took special precautions to ensure his safety while in custody. Sheriff Budensiek emphasized that Woods would not be placed in general population with other inmates.

"We're going to make sure he's safe. We're not going to put him in general population," Budensiek explained. "He's not going to be with other inmates that could hurt him or try to capitalize on what he did. He'll pay the price, but he's not going to pay the price by getting punished in jail."

Investigation Findings

Authorities determined that Woods' impairment likely resulted from medication rather than alcohol consumption. Sheriff Budensiek noted that breathalyzer tests showed no alcohol presence, but Woods refused to provide a urine sample for further testing.

"At the Martin County Jail, and even on scene, we really weren't suspicious of alcohol being involved in this case," Budensiek clarified. "And that proved to be true at the jail. So Mr. Woods did a breathalyzer test, blew triple zeros. But when it came time for us to ask for a urinalysis test, he refused."

Public Response and Aftermath

The incident has drawn significant public attention, with former President Donald Trump offering a characteristically guarded response. Woods' mugshot was released to the public following standard processing procedures at the jail.

Sheriff Budensiek maintained that the handling of the case followed standard legal protocols regardless of the individual involved. "I'm not trying to dramatize, but it doesn't matter who you are. If you break the law, we're going to follow the law," he stated firmly during the press conference.

Woods was released on bail after completing the mandatory eight-hour detention period, marking the latest chapter in the golf legend's ongoing challenges with injuries and legal matters following his serious 2021 car accident.
