Oscar Mayer's iconic Wienermobile race is set to make a triumphant return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this May, offering fans a second helping of the quirky competition that proved a major hit last year. The brand announced on Sunday that all six of its famous street-ready vehicles will once again compete on the historic 2.5-mile oval, continuing the light-hearted tradition during racing's biggest weekend.
The Wienie 500 Returns for Carb Day
The event, officially dubbed the Wienie 500, is scheduled for May 22 as part of the track's annual Carburation Day festivities. This places the spectacle just two days before the prestigious Indianapolis 500, providing motorsport enthusiasts with an entertaining appetiser before the main event. Organisers decided to bring back the race after last year's inaugural edition received such an overwhelmingly positive response from spectators.
Regional Rivalries and Fan Engagement
The presentation will maintain a familiar format for those who enjoyed last year's competition. Each Wienermobile will be decorated with custom decals representing American regional hot dog favourites, while drivers will sport special Hotdogger racing suits. The iconic "Wiener Song" will provide the soundtrack, and the champion will celebrate by driving into the designated "wieners circle."
Defending champion Slaw Dog, representing the Southeast, will attempt to retain its crown against returning regional favourites:
- Chi Dog (Midwest)
- New York Dog (East)
- Chili Dog (South)
- Seattle Dog (Northwest)
However, the Sonoran Dog may not return after its disappointing performance in 2025. Oscar Mayer is putting the final entry decision in the hands of fans through a "Pick Your Dog" bracket on Instagram, where supporters can choose from seven possibilities, including the Sonoran Dog. Regular updates will be provided across the brand's Instagram and TikTok channels.
Amplifying the Experience
Kelsey Rice, Oscar Mayer's brand communications director, explained the decision to bring back the event in an official statement. "The response to the first Wienie 500 was overwhelming, and we heard the fans loud and clear that they were hungry for more," Rice said. "This year, we're supercharging the experience, delivering an even bigger, bolder and more unforgettable event that puts the fans at the forefront."
Rice added that the 2026 edition will feature "amplified engagement, intensified rivalries and more surprises in store," promising "an unparalleled live experience that will leave them craving more." The event represents a creative marketing initiative that blends American culinary tradition with motorsport spectacle, creating a unique intersection of brand promotion and fan entertainment.
