Glasgow 2026 Opening Ceremony Seeks 700 Volunteers

Organisers have revealed that the opening ceremony for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will present a "gorgeous story" of the city's rich history, with preparations now underway to recruit 700 volunteers to help bring the spectacular show to life.

A Celebration of Glasgow's Heritage

The ceremony is scheduled to take place on July 23 at the Ovo Hydro arena, marking the official commencement of this year's Commonwealth Games. While specific details about the ceremony remain under wraps, officials have emphasised it will offer a fruitful opportunity for participants wanting to contribute to this major international event.

An Authentic Glasgow Narrative

Louisa Mahon, chief marketing officer for the 2026 Games, described the ceremony as "an incredible opportunity to tell the story of this incredible city and a story of the Commonwealth." She elaborated further, stating: "This is a gorgeous story of Glasgow told in a really authentic way, but with an incredible Commonwealth twist."

Mahon continued: "A story about what happens when you have people feel transformation and really amplifying the story of Glasgow, which is a place that forever has reinvented and invented and created things that have, quite frankly, transformed the world. The show will tell that story and why it's so important, particularly at a time like now, for people to be together, come together and celebrate."

Volunteer Opportunities Abound

Organisers are seeking individuals aged 16 and over to fill a wide range of roles within the ceremony production. These positions include musicians, singers, and dancers, with no prior experience necessary for applicants. The volunteer recruitment represents a significant community engagement effort for the Games.

Costume designer Carole Millar, who has created the outfits for the ceremony, shared that her involvement has helped rekindle her affection for Glasgow. "I've kind of rediscovered my love of Glasgow," Millar explained. "Just out in the streets, observing and thrashing out within creative meetings, and just trying to deliver the Glasgow that I live in and love, trying to show that positive, passionate Glasgow, with all its diversity and all its lovely people."

Inclusive and Sustainable Production

Show and stage director Roxana Cole highlighted the ceremony's commitment to inclusivity and sustainability. "We're creating something that we hope is the most inclusive and the most sustainable opening ceremony that we've done so far," Cole stated.

She emphasised the importance of community involvement, noting: "For me, they are the most memorable, and we involve communities because it's really at the core of what this show is. We worked last year, we did two big workshops with the community across Glasgow so that we know that they're really rooted and integral to the narrative we've made so far."

Application Process and Timeline

The deadline for volunteer applications is April 24, though organisers note this may close earlier if demand proves particularly high. Auditions for selected roles will take place in Glasgow on May 9 and 10.

Interested individuals can submit their applications through the official Glasgow 2026 website at glasgow2026.com/casting. Those wishing to stay informed about ticket releases for the Games can also sign up for the official newsletter via glasgow2026.com.
