Former Warriors star turned television pundit Shaun Johnson has delivered a stinging rebuke to Melbourne Storm head coach Craig Bellamy, following a heated dressing-room confrontation captured on camera during a recent match. Bellamy unleashed a furious tirade at forward Joe Chan at halftime of Melbourne's 38-14 defeat to the New Zealand Warriors on Saturday night.
Storm's Struggles Continue with Fourth Straight Loss
The defeat marks Melbourne's fourth consecutive loss, leaving them languishing in 13th position on the NRL ladder at the time of reporting. This result also handed the Warriors their first victory in Melbourne since 2014, compounding the Storm's recent woes. Bellamy, notoriously nicknamed 'Bellyache' for his explosive temper during games, directed his anger squarely at Chan in the sheds, repeatedly pointing and gesticulating at the player before withdrawing him from the match just five minutes into the second half.
Johnson Defends Chan as Unfair Scapegoat
Shaun Johnson, providing analysis for Fox Sports' coverage, strongly criticised Bellamy's approach, arguing that Chan was unfairly singled out when the entire Storm team performed well below their usual standards. "Joe Chan was the scapegoat tonight," Johnson stated emphatically. "Those pictures don't look good. I've been in a similar position where it's just not clicking for you and you try harder but it snowballs and becomes worse, and you think on the sideline wondering if I'm the only reason for the team's poor performance. But he wasn't the only reason. He wasn't alone. It was right across the board."
Fox Sports host Yvonne Sampson echoed Johnson's sentiments, expressing sympathy for Chan. "He was the whipping boy tonight," she remarked. "He copped it from Bellamy and his teammates and he was dejected." Meanwhile, Fox colour commentator and Storm legend Cooper Cronk suggested that star players Cameron Munster and Harry Grant would also face Bellamy's wrath for what he described as "lazy" defensive efforts in the aftermath of the loss.
Bellamy's Post-Match Comments Hint at Drastic Changes
During his post-match press conference, Bellamy was questioned about the team's defensive frailties, particularly after conceding 50 points to Penrith in their previous outing. The veteran coach did not mince his words, expressing deep frustration with the team's performance. "We done a lot of work on our defence this week. May as well have gone to the pub and had a couple of beers," Bellamy lamented. "There's a lot of things going wrong so we need to have a good, hard look at ourselves. We're all going to take responsibility, and if there's people not doing their jobs properly, well, we need to make changes. That's with staff as well."
This sequence of four straight losses represents Melbourne's worst run since 2022, highlighting a significant downturn in form for the traditionally dominant club. Bellamy's latest outburst adds to his long history of on-camera eruptions, which he has previously expressed regret over. Last year, the coach admitted feeling "embarrassed" by some footage featured in the football documentary Inside the Storm, revealing that over 900 hours of vision had been compiled for the production.
"I definitely forgot I had the microphone on at times," Bellamy confessed. "I wish I could take back some things I said to the coaching staff about the players, but I guess it was heat-of-the-moment stuff." Despite these past admissions, Bellamy's latest confrontation with Chan has drawn fresh criticism, with Johnson's comments underscoring concerns about the coach's management style during a challenging period for the Storm.
