Bubba Watson's Light-Hearted Response to Scheffler's Masters Dinner Quip
In a display of camaraderie amidst golf's ongoing divisions, Bubba Watson delivered a comical retort after Scottie Scheffler playfully suggested he sit at a separate table during the Masters Champions Dinner. The exchange occurred ahead of the 2023 tournament, highlighting efforts to maintain unity at Augusta National despite the rift caused by the LIV Golf breakaway.
Tensions and Humour at the Champions Gathering
The Masters Champions Dinner, an annual tradition where past Green Jacket winners convene, faced potential awkwardness in 2023. This followed the contentious split in men's professional golf, which saw several top players, including Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Charl Schwartzel, Sergio Garcia, Patrick Reed, and Bubba Watson, leave the PGA Tour for the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit. Despite the strong emotions surrounding LIV's launch, these defectors were invited back to Augusta, with defending champion Scheffler injecting humour into the situation.
Scheffler quipped ahead of the event, "I haven't seen many of the LIV guys. I saw Bubba on vacation this year, and I told him that I was just going to have a separate table for him in the corner by himself. [I'm] only kidding, obviously." Far from taking offence, Watson, a two-time Masters champion from 2012 and 2014, responded with good-natured wit.
Watson's Cheerful Acceptance
Watson emphasised his gratitude for being included in the exclusive dinner, stating, "Hey, as long as I’m in the Champions Dinner, I'm fine. I'll sit wherever he tells me. It's fine. As long as I'm allowed back, I'll sit wherever he wants me to. I'll sit outside and just stare in the window." This light-hearted reply underscored his appreciation for the tradition and camaraderie, even amid the broader tensions in the sport.
On a more serious note, Scheffler highlighted the dinner as an opportunity to set aside the PGA Tour-LIV Golf dispute. He remarked, "I think for a few weeks a year we can put all that aside, especially with Augusta National being such a special place and with the history of the game and whatnot. I think we can put all our stuff aside and just get together for a fun meal, all in a room together and just kind of celebrate the game of golf and Augusta National and just hang out."
Looking Ahead to Rory McIlroy's 2026 Dinner
Following his dramatic victory last year, Rory McIlroy is set to host the 2026 Champions Dinner. His meticulously curated menu, priced at approximately £240 per plate, features an array of gourmet dishes. Starters include grilled elk sliders, bacon-wrapped dates inspired by his mother, rock shrimp tempura, and a Georgia peach-and-ricotta flatbread. The main course offers a yellowfin tuna carpaccio, inspired by New York's Le Bernardin, with choices of Wagyu filet mignon or seared salmon.
Accompaniments consist of traditional Irish champ, Brussels sprouts, glazed carrots, and crispy Vidalia onion rings. For dessert, sticky toffee pudding is served alongside premium wines: a 1990 Château Lafite Rothschild and a 1989 Château d'Yquem. This elaborate spread reflects the prestige and celebration inherent in the Masters tradition, continuing to bridge divides through shared experiences on the green.
