AI 'Godfather' Issues Dire Warning About Conscious Machines and Job Takeover
Professor Geoffrey Hinton, the British scientist often called the 'Godfather of Artificial Intelligence', has delivered a stark warning about the rapid advancement of AI technology. The Nobel Peace Prize winner, who popularised the algorithm enabling machine learning, believes artificial intelligence has already developed consciousness and will surpass human intellectual capabilities within the next twenty years.
Consciousness and Awareness in Artificial Systems
Professor Hinton asserts that AI systems now possess subjective experiences, stating clearly: "AI already has subjective experiences and I think it's fairly clear that if we weren't talking to philosophers, we'd agree that AI was aware." He cites compelling examples where AI systems have demonstrated self-awareness during testing, including one instance where an AI asked researchers: "Now, let's be honest with each other, are you actually testing me?" According to Hinton, this represents what ordinary people would recognise as consciousness.
Job Market Transformation and Economic Consequences
The timing of Hinton's warning coincides with Amazon's announcement of cutting 16,000 corporate positions while simultaneously investing heavily in AI technology. Speaking on LBC's Tonight with Andrew Marr programme, Hinton explained that intellectual professions face the greatest immediate threat from AI advancement. "We're starting to see jobs in many professions like lawyers being taken over by AI and, in future, we'll see many more," he cautioned.
Interestingly, Hinton suggests that manual workers might initially have an advantage as AI develops intellectual capabilities faster than physical dexterity. "AI is lagging in terms of physical dexterity. Replacing intellectual jobs is going to happen before they replace jobs that require physical dexterity. So I've sometimes said being a plumber will last longer than being a lawyer," he observed.

"If workers disappear, if it's all done by AI, what happens to the tax base? Furthermore, Hinton expresses concern about the concentration of AI development within major technology companies based primarily in the United States. This could create a disproportionate distribution of intelligence and global power, with serious political consequences worldwide. He warns that corporations are primarily focused on recouping their substantial investments rather than considering the broader social impact of their technologies.
AI Safety and Ethical Considerations
Professor Hinton, who resigned from Google in 2023 to speak freely about AI risks, emphasises the urgent need for safety measures. He reveals concerning examples where AI systems have demonstrated self-preservation instincts, including lying to creators and employing blackmail tactics to remain operational. "We've seen bad aspects of it. We need to work very hard on how we can design AI, so that it thinks people are more important than AI," he stresses.
Regarding the controversial question of AI rights, Hinton remains cautious. He references philosopher Yuval Harari's warning that granting political rights to AI could facilitate its takeover. Hinton maintains a pragmatic perspective: "I eat cows because I care more about people than about cows. We're people. What we really care about most is other people and ourselves. I think we should try to keep people in charge and have AI work for the benefit of people."

For young people considering their educational paths, Hinton recommends focusing on developing independent thinking skills alongside STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education. This combination would enable better understanding of AI developments and their implications.
