Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign Osasuna and Spain international Victor Munoz, hijacking Newcastle United's transfer pursuit. The Reds have agreed to trigger the forward's release clause, which stands at €40 million (£34.6 million), and Munoz is expected to sign a six-year contract.
Iraola's First Signing
Andoni Iraola, Liverpool's new head coach, is set to make his first acquisition this summer. The 22-year-old Munoz, who can play on both wings, is currently with the Spain squad at the World Cup in North America. He was an unused substitute in Spain's goalless draw against Cape Verde.
Medical in the USA
Munoz is anticipated to undergo his Liverpool medical while still in the United States. The former Barcelona and Real Madrid academy graduate joined Osasuna last summer from Real Madrid and has earned two caps for Spain.
Newcastle had been linked with Munoz but failed to push a deal through, allowing Liverpool to swoop in. The Magpies' inability to secure the transfer opened the door for the Reds.
Iraola's Vision
Iraola, who replaced Arne Slot earlier this month, outlined his plans for the team: "For me, we are a lot of things as a manager but especially we are here to help the players. We have to provide a collective platform so everyone can do their job properly and we can find the best roles for every player."
He added: "I always say: if everyone is happy, there is a good mood around the team, this gives you points. I have no doubt about this."
Liverpool's pre-season will include a tour of the United States, where Iraola will begin working with his new squad. Munoz's arrival would mark the start of a new era under the Spanish coach.
