The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has taken decisive action against two major driving schools, imposing a substantial financial penalty and mandating refunds for thousands of learner drivers. The AA Driving School and BSM Driving School, both owned by the AA, have been fined £4.2 million and ordered to refund more than 80,000 customers due to illegal drip-pricing practices.

According to the CMA, the driving schools failed to include a mandatory £3 booking fee in their upfront prices, a tactic known as drip-pricing. This practice involves hiding additional costs until later in the purchasing process, misleading consumers about the true total price. The CMA has declared this an illegal breach of consumer law, emphasising that transparency in pricing is essential for fair competition and consumer protection.

The refunds will vary per individual, depending on the number of lesson packages purchased, with an average refund of approximately £9. In total, the repayments are expected to exceed £760,000. When combined with the £4.2 million fine, the overall financial impact on the schools will approach £5 million.
