McCain Tests Chips and Ice Cream Combo After Survey Reveals Quarter of Brits Fancy It
McCain Tests Chips and Ice Cream Combo After Survey

A surprising new study has uncovered that one in four British adults would be willing to try the unusual combination of warm French fries dipped in ice cream. The frozen food giant McCain conducted a survey of 2,192 adults, revealing that 24.8% are open to mixing these sweet and salty flavours.

Mr. Chippy Van Launch

In response to these unexpected results, McCain has announced the launch of a special ice cream van named Mr. Chippy. This van will serve the bizarre combo of crispy French fries with creamy soft-serve ice cream in a cone, offering free tastings to the public. The initiative aims to spark a lively debate about this viral food trend.

Location and Schedule

The Mr. Chippy van will make appearances at two popular beach locations. It will visit Brighton Beach at the i360 East Site, Lower Kings Road, Brighton, BN1 2FN, on Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29, from 12 pm to 6 pm. Following that, it will head to Lusty Glaze Beach, 9 Lusty Glaze Rd, Newquay TR7 3AD, on Saturday, April 4, and Sunday, April 5, during the same hours.

Marketing Strategy and Public Reaction

Laura Koscik, Marketing Director at McCain, expressed enthusiasm for creating a 'love it or hate it' discussion around the combination. She stated, "Mr. Chippy is serving up the perfect treat for a spring day out at the beach. Our Crispy French Fries dipped in a cone of creamy soft-serve are made to share and spark a proper debate. Some swear by this creamy and crispy combo while others wrinkle their nose - but that’s half the fun."

Koscik added, "We’re all about making shared experiences even better with chips, so we hope people enjoy giving this unexpected viral combo a go." This move highlights McCain's focus on innovative marketing and engaging consumers with novel food experiences.

Nostalgia and Ice Cream Trends

Meanwhile, separate research indicates that ice cream holds a special place in British hearts. Nearly half of adults, 49%, say that a 99 ice cream is their strongest reminder of childhood, surpassing other nostalgic triggers like classic weekend TV or the Argos catalogue. This iconic soft serve evokes fond memories of summer holidays and visits from local ice-cream vans.

Consumer Preferences and Home Trends

The study by Ninja last year also showed a growing interest in recreating these moments at home. 45% of consumers are eager to make soft serve themselves, and 73% would like to own a machine to do so. When it comes to flavours, vanilla remains the top choice at 36%, followed by chocolate and mint choc chip at 19% each.

Regarding cones, 41% prefer waffle cones, while 27% opt for traditional wafer cones. However, nearly 90% agree that a chocolate flake is essential for a true 99 ice cream experience. These insights reflect ongoing trends in consumer behaviour and nostalgia-driven food choices.
