British Gas is expanding its Warm & Working programme, offering free boiler services and home upgrades to thousands of additional households. The energy supplier will directly contact those eligible for the scheme, which is available to recipients of the Warm Home Discount. Importantly, you do not need to be a British Gas customer to qualify; referrals can be made through partner organisations or the British Gas Energy Trust.
What the Scheme Offers
Through the programme, British Gas engineers will carry out various home improvements, including boiler servicing, heating system upgrades, smart thermostat installations, radiator improvements, and essential safety checks such as carbon monoxide detector installations. These measures aim to enhance home efficiency and reduce the risk of unexpected breakdowns during colder months.
Expansion and Impact
The initiative has already delivered approximately £500,000 worth of upgrades to over 500 homes. It is now set to double, with plans to support more than 1,000 households this summer. According to Checkatrade, the average cost of a boiler service is around £100, though prices vary depending on boiler type.
Gary Booker, Managing Director at British Gas, stated: “We know many households are very concerned about their energy costs, and we want to do everything we can to help. By expanding our Warm & Working scheme, we will support more people with practical improvements to make their homes more efficient. We want to give households peace of mind and help them avoid unexpected breakdowns when they need their heating the most. This is just one of the ways we are helping those struggling with energy costs – there is lots of support available such as grants and advice we offer through the British Gas Energy Trust. And you don’t need to be a British Gas customer to be eligible for help.”
Future Plans and Context
British Gas plans to expand the scheme further during the 2026–27 period. This comes as higher oil prices due to the Iran war are expected to drive up UK energy bills from July, with analysts at Cornwall Insight forecasting the price cap could rise to £1,849.51 per year. Ofgem will announce its July price cap level by May 27; the current cap is £1,641 per year. Households using heating oil and LPG have already seen significant cost increases, prompting government support packages.
