A luxury Land Rover Discovery worth around £80,000 was found completely submerged by the tide on a beach in Abersoch, on the northwest coast of Wales, on Sunday morning. Bemused locals walking along the shore spotted the silver vehicle during their early morning strolls, with almost all of it hidden beneath the calm waters.
The Incident
A photograph of the unusual scene shows the silver Land Rover Discovery almost entirely underwater, with only the roof and a bright red tow rope attached to the rear visible above the surface. How the vehicle and its owner ended up in such a predicament remains unclear, though the incident was first reported by the local website Abersoch.com.
Online Reactions
The image quickly circulated online, with some skeptics questioning whether the sinking was staged. However, Abersoch.com confirmed that a 10 am tide had fully submerged the vehicle. Many social media users commented on the incident, with one writing: "Not the first and it won't be the last." Another remarked that it marked the start of "silly season," when tourists and second-home owners, unfamiliar with coastal conditions, cause mishaps. They added: "When will the bloody tourists learn."
Others expressed sympathy, noting that the Land Rover's 4x4 capability "probably gave [the driver] a sense of security that it can go anywhere - we all know it can't. We have to still feel a little sorry for his loss." Another user wrote: "Very sad to see that something went wrong. See many cars go into the sea to retrieve boat trailers, and you know that car will be rotten very soon afterwards." They also pointed out that experienced locals use long ropes to retrieve trailers without getting wet, but sand shifts and sinkholes remain risks, explaining why old tractors are often used instead.
Local Concerns
Residents noted that the area, popular with tourists and second-home owners drawn by its scenic beauty, may see more such incidents in the future. The beach at Abersoch is known for its tidal changes, and vehicles driving on the sand can easily become trapped if drivers are unaware of the risks.
