HMRC Alert: 18 Days to Avoid £100 Self Assessment Penalty
HMRC deadline: 18 days to avoid £100 penalty

Millions of taxpayers across the UK are facing a critical deadline this month, with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) issuing a stark warning. Anyone required to complete a Self Assessment tax return must file online and settle any tax owed by January 31, 2026. Missing this cut-off will trigger an automatic £100 penalty.

App Usage Surges as Deadline Looms

With the deadline now just 18 days away, HMRC is actively encouraging people to use its official mobile app to make their payment. The tax office revealed that since April 6, 2025, almost 340,000 people have used the HMRC app to pay their Self Assessment tax. This marks a significant increase of 132,788 people compared to the same period last year.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, emphasised the app's convenience in a public message. "The Self Assessment deadline is less than one month away, and thousands of people have already paid their tax bill via the HMRC app," she said. "It is quick and easy to do, and you can also see your payment history."

Payment Options and Support for Those Struggling

For the 2024-2025 tax year, all Self Assessment customers must file their return online. While the HMRC app is a popular choice, other payment methods include direct payment from a bank account, setting up a direct debit, or paying online via the GOV.UK portal.

HMRC also offers a vital lifeline for those who cannot pay their full bill immediately. Individuals who owe less than £30,000 may be eligible for a Time To Pay arrangement, allowing them to spread the cost in instalments, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.

Support is available for those needing help to complete their return. HMRC provides 24/7 online guidance, including YouTube videos, webinars, a digital assistant, and step-by-step instructions. Most queries can be resolved online without needing to call.

Phone and Webchat Support Details

Taxpayers who need to speak to an adviser can call HMRC from Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. It is crucial to note that phone lines will close on Friday 30 January and reopen on Monday 2 February – after the deadline has passed. For full phone support, contact must be made before January 30. On the deadline day itself, Saturday 31 January, HMRC will offer support via webchat through its Online Services Helpdesk.

Beyond Payments: The HMRC App's Full Capabilities

The free HMRC app, available on both Apple's App Store and Google Play, offers a wide range of services beyond just making payments. Once users create a personal ID, they can access the app using a six-digit pin, fingerprint, or facial recognition.

Key functions of the app include:

  • Checking your tax code, National Insurance number, and Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR).
  • Viewing your income, benefits, and employment history from the last five years.
  • Tracking your Self-Assessment tax bill and how much you owe.
  • Checking your State Pension forecast and Child Benefit details.
  • Identifying and paying for gaps in your National Insurance contributions.
  • Claiming tax refunds, updating personal details, and using a tax calculator.
  • Setting reminders for future Self-Assessment payments.

With the clock ticking down to January 31, taxpayers are urged to act promptly to file their return, calculate their liability, and arrange payment to avoid unnecessary fines.
