AirAsia Orders 150 Airbus A220 Jets in $19 Billion Efficiency Deal
AirAsia Orders 150 Airbus A220 Jets in $19B Deal

Budget airline AirAsia has announced a landmark order for 150 Airbus A220-300 jets, valued at approximately $19 billion at list prices. This represents the largest single order ever placed for the A220 aircraft family.

Record Order Announced in Canada

The deal was unveiled on Thursday at an Airbus factory in Mirabel, Quebec, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in attendance. Airlines worldwide are modernizing their fleets and seeking greater fuel efficiency to manage rising operational costs, particularly amid geopolitical tensions such as the Iran war, which have driven fuel prices higher.

Fuel Efficiency and Market Expansion

AirAsia stated that the A220 aircraft offers superior fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions, enhancing operational efficiency and resilience against high fuel prices. With a capacity of up to 160 seats, the jet can achieve profitability with fewer passengers, enabling the airline to serve smaller, high-growth markets and secondary hubs that were previously commercially unviable.

Tony Fernandes, co-founder and adviser of AirAsia, who also serves as CEO of Capital A (the majority stakeholder), emphasized the strategic rationale: "In an environment of high fuel prices and volatility, the answer is not to stand still, it’s to double down on efficiency. This order reflects our long-term discipline and the scale of our ambitions. The A220 is the perfect tool for our next phase of growth."

Flexibility and Future Growth

AirAsia holds options to increase the order to as many as 300 aircraft, covering the wider A220 family and potential future variants. Bulk purchasers typically receive discounts from list prices. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in 2028, with the aircraft serving destinations across Southeast Asia and the broader Asia-Pacific region. This will allow AirAsia to redeploy its larger A320 and A321 jets to mid-haul routes, while A330s can focus on long-haul services to Europe, Australia, and North America.

Boost for Airbus A220 Program

The order provides a significant boost for Airbus, pushing total firm orders for the A220 beyond 1,000 units. As of March 2026, Airbus had delivered 501 A220 aircraft to 25 carriers worldwide.
