Social media influencer and entrepreneur Spanian has expanded his food franchise, opening a new Spanian's Kebabs outlet on King Street in the inner-west Sydney suburb of Newtown. The launch this past Saturday saw the online personality greeting customers, though observers noted he appeared somewhat strained during the opening.
A Launch Met With Divided Opinions
The new eatery's debut has generated a split response from the public. Its Google Reviews score currently stands at 2.8 out of 5, based on a mixture of praise and sharp criticism. Several early patrons expressed significant disappointment, particularly regarding value for money.
One reviewer lamented, "Very disappointing. The portion was extremely small with only tiny pieces of meat in an $18 sandwich. It felt overpriced and underwhelming." Another simply stated, "Stale bread. Dry meat. Less than average," while a further comment declared it would be their "first and last time" visiting.
However, other customers offered glowing testimonials. One praised the quality, writing, "You can tell by the meat's tenderness that is good quality, better than some well established kebab shops." Another said, "The food and service were perfect. Good experience overall," with additional compliments highlighting the seasoned chips.
The 'Cursed Corner' Challenge
Spanian, whose real name is Anthony Lees, has taken a notable gamble with the location. The site at 322 King Street is referred to by some in the local restaurant trade as a 'cursed corner' due to its history of failed ventures.
The premises were vacant for three years before becoming a Mr Potato fast-food outlet in April 2023. That business showed signs of trouble within months and ultimately closed its doors in June 2025, paving the way for Spanian's Kebabs to move in.
From Eshay to Entrepreneur
The launch marks the latest chapter in Spanian's remarkable transformation. Once synonymous with the 'eshay' subculture, the 40-year-old has a serious criminal past, having served more than 12 years in prison for offences including armed robbery and drug trafficking.
Since his last release in 2017, he has rebuilt his life as a legitimate businessman and entertainer. His YouTube series 'Into the Hood', exploring high-crime areas globally, helped forge his influencer career and significant wealth. His personal life has also seen changes, having recently ended his marriage to Angela McColl and now dating 22-year-old Ava Jean Walker.
The success of this latest venture in a challenging location remains to be seen, but it undeniably adds a new layer to the complex story of one of Sydney's most controversial public figures.
