A traditional British seaside town has been officially named the nation's undisputed capital for a beloved culinary staple. Scarborough has taken the crown as the UK's chip shop capital, following research that calculated the highest density of fish and chip shops per capita.
The Numbers Behind the Crown
The analysis, conducted by Suomikasinot, found that Scarborough boasts a remarkable 93 fish and chip establishments. This gives the North Yorkshire resort the highest number of chippies per 10,000 people in the entire country. For residents and visitors alike, it means an exceptional choice is never far away, with outlets scattered throughout the town.
It confirms Scarborough's status as a premier destination for food enthusiasts seeking the perfect portion of fried fish and chips. The town's coastal location ensures a ready supply of fresh seafood for its many restaurants and takeaways.
Top Spots for a Taste of the Sea
Among the plethora of options, some establishments stand out for their exceptional quality and reputation. The Lifeboat Fish Bar, a family-run business located on the seafront near the lifeboat station, is frequently rated as the top spot on TripAdvisor. Diners often queue outside for its popular offerings, with one recent visitor praising the "delicious" food, great value, and service.
Another highly recommended venue is Catch 55, which operates as both a restaurant and takeaway. Patrons have highlighted its friendly welcome, perfectly cooked haddock, and delicious homemade tartare sauce, making it a firm favourite among the town's many choices.
Coastal Competition and Inland Contenders
The research also highlighted other areas with a high density of chip shops. East Lindsay, a district encompassing popular resorts like Skegness and Mablethorpe, secured second place with a total of 89 chippies. This equates to roughly one shop for every two miles of its coastline.
Following closely in third was the iconic seaside destination of Blackpool, with 84 fish and chip shops. While coastal towns dominated the top of the list, the study noted that some inland areas, including Rossendale and Burnley, also featured prominently.
Beyond its culinary fame, Scarborough remains a major draw for UK holidaymakers. Its vast sandy beach, stunning coastal views from the 105ft Observation Ferris wheel, and family attractions like an 18-hole mini golf course provide the perfect backdrop for a classic seaside day out, complete with a paper-wrapped portion of the nation's favourite dish.
