New industry data reveals that British and Irish holidaymakers set a new record for ocean cruise bookings last year. According to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), passengers from the UK and Ireland took 2.54 million ocean cruises in 2025, surpassing the previous peak of 2.4 million in 2024.
Most Popular Destinations
The Mediterranean remains the top choice for cruise travellers, selected by 34.5% of passengers. Northern Europe follows with 27.2%, while the Caribbean attracts 13.7% of UK and Irish cruisers. These figures include departures from UK ports as well as from international hubs such as the United States and Europe.
Demographic Shifts
Although cruising has traditionally appealed to an older demographic, the average passenger age now stands at 54.6. Notably, the number of children under 12 increased by 7%, indicating a growing trend of family cruise holidays.
The average cruise duration was 9.6 days, consistent with the 9.7-day average recorded in 2024. Seven-night sailings remain the most popular length, accounting for 44% of all departures.
Industry Insights
Paul Ludlow, president of Carnival UK and P&O Cruises, noted that passengers are increasingly drawn to cruises for onboard entertainment, dining, and immersive shore experiences rather than just the itinerary itself. Antonio Paradiso, vice president of international sales for MSC Cruises, highlighted strong demand for no-fly cruises from the UK, citing convenience and value for families and over-packers.
Andy Harmer, managing director of CLIA UK and Ireland, commented: “Cruise continues to appeal to a wide range of holidaymakers, with the Mediterranean, Northern Europe and the Caribbean all offering a great range of experiences and itineraries. They represent a shift towards deeper cultural engagement and more time spent in destinations, supporting local economies through onshore activities and extended stays.”
The growth coincides with the launch of new vessels such as Star Princess in summer 2025 and the upcoming Legend of the Seas in July 2026.
