Drivers across the UK are facing the familiar winter battle of fogged-up windscreens, but a simple solution using a frequently overlooked button in your car can clear the glass in moments.
The winter windscreen struggle
The recent cold snap has brought frost, ice, and persistent condensation to vehicles nationwide. While external frost can be scraped away, condensation forming on the inside of the glass creates a dangerous fog that obscures vision and must be cleared before driving.
James Lee, media manager at Irish dealership Kylemore Cars, has taken to social media to demonstrate an effective method for rapidly eliminating this mist. His advice goes beyond the well-known tactic of using the car's heater and air conditioning.
The crucial button you must switch off
In an Instagram video, James outlined a key step many motorists miss. After turning the heater to maximum and switching on the air conditioning to draw moisture from the air, he emphasised a "crucial step".
You must ensure the recirculation button is turned off. This button, typically marked with an icon of a car and a looping arrow, recirculates the existing air inside the vehicle when activated.
"To defog your windows swiftly, it's essential to ensure this feature is deactivated," the expert advised. "Otherwise, you'll simply be circulating the damp air already present in your car." By switching it off, your car draws in fresh, drier air from outside, which rapidly replaces the humid interior air causing the condensation.
An extra tip to speed up the process
James highlighted another "key step" to accelerate clearing your view. Cracking open a window for just a minute or two will significantly speed up the removal of moist air from the cabin, even on a cold day.
"It just speeds up the process of getting the humid air inside the cabin, out," he explained.
Quick guide to defogging your windscreen
- Turn on the defrost setting to direct air to the windscreen.
- Set the heater to a warm temperature.
- Switch on the air conditioning.
- Set the fan to a high speed.
- Ensure the air recirculation button is OFF.
- Crack open a window briefly.
- Wipe any remaining moisture with a microfibre cloth.
How to prevent windscreen fogging
- Keep windows clean, as dirt attracts moisture.
- Remove wet items like umbrellas or coats from the car.
- Consider using an anti-fog product on the inside of the glass.
With these expert tips, particularly the vital step concerning the recirculation button, drivers can save time and ensure a clear, safe view of the road during the chilly winter months.
