Istanbul Airport Crowned Europe's Busiest Hub for Fourth Consecutive Year

A comprehensive new study has confirmed that Istanbul Airport has retained its title as Europe's busiest aviation hub for the fourth year running. The larger of two international airports serving the Turkish capital recorded an average of 1,490 daily arrivals and departures throughout 2025, representing a significant six percent increase from the previous year's figures.

European Air Traffic Sees Substantial Growth

This announcement comes as European air travel continues its post-pandemic recovery, with a total of 11.2 million flights taking off across the continent in 2025. This marks a notable four percent increase compared to 2024 traffic levels. While UK airports experienced a more modest two percent rise in average daily operations, virtually all of Europe's busiest countries, airlines, and airports reported higher year-on-year traffic volumes.

Top Five Rankings Remain Unchanged

As Istanbul maintains its dominant position, the rankings of Europe's five busiest airports remain identical to last year's standings. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol follows closely in second place with 1,351 daily flights, while London Heathrow secures third position with 1,315 operations. Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport claims fourth place with 1,314 daily flights, and Frankfurt Airport rounds out the top five with 1,261 daily arrivals and departures.

Punctuality Shows Modest Improvement Amid Challenges

Despite the increased traffic volume, data reveals that most of Europe's top thirty busiest airports actually improved their departure punctuality in 2025 compared to the previous year. According to Eurocontrol statistics, 76.1 percent of flight arrivals were punctual in 2025, representing a 3.5 percent improvement from 2024 figures. However, this still means that nearly one in four flights experienced delays.

Ivaylo Danailov, CEO of flight compensation specialists SkyRefund which conducted the study, commented: '2025 presented something of a paradox for European air travel. While we witnessed a recovery toward pre-pandemic traffic levels and a significant reduction in total cancellations, the passenger experience remained negatively impacted by persistent delays, with approximately a quarter of all flights failing to arrive on schedule.'

Danailov further explained: 'For passengers, this statistical reality means that while your flight is more likely to depart than it was in 2024, it is now statistically more probable than ever to arrive late enough to qualify for compensation under EU261/UK261 regulations. Travellers should be aware that a three-hour delay typically entitles them to up to €600 (£522) in compensation, regardless of the airline's stated reason for the delay.'

UK Airports Face Stressful Distinction

Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, two major airports have received an unwelcome accolade, being named among the world's most stressful places to catch a flight. A report by travel insurance comparison service iSelect listed both Gatwick Airport and Manchester Airport among the top ten global airports most likely to fray travellers' nerves in 2026.

Gatwick, the UK's second-largest airport, ranked eighth on this stressful airports list, while Manchester secured an even more concerning third position. The top spot went to Newark Liberty International Airport in the United States, with Humberto Delgado Airport in Portugal placing second.

The study found that London Gatwick operates under 'constant operational pressure' due to its single-runway configuration, with minor disruptions frequently escalating into significant problems, particularly during peak summer holiday periods. Manchester Airport earned its stressful designation due to continual congestion and operational disruptions, recording an average flight delay time of 23 minutes and a baggage claim delay score of 69 percent.
