Thousands of passenger journeys are set to face significant disruption in March as London Liverpool Street, the United Kingdom's busiest railway station, prepares to close for essential engineering works. The station will be shut for a total of five days, impacting weekend travel plans and necessitating rail replacement services for affected routes.
Key Dates and Impact on Services
The closures are scheduled for specific weekends in March, with the station completely inaccessible on the 15th, 21st, 22nd, 28th, and 29th. Additionally, some disruption is anticipated to begin earlier, on the 7th and 8th of March, as preliminary works get underway. This planned maintenance will affect a wide range of train services operating in and out of the station.
Affected Train Operators and Lines
Passengers using Greater Anglia services from Southend Victoria and Ingatestone, as well as from Cheshunt via Broxbourne, will experience disruptions during the closure periods. Similarly, some c2c services that utilise Liverpool Street station will be impacted, requiring alternative travel arrangements.
The Elizabeth line will also see closures between Stratford and Shenfield on weekends throughout March, further compounding travel challenges for commuters. London Overground services are not spared, with Weaver line trains from Enfield Town, Cheshunt, and Chingford into Liverpool Street facing suspensions. Additionally, Liberty line services between Romford and Upminster will be halted during the affected dates.
Alternative Travel Arrangements
To mitigate the inconvenience, rail replacement buses will be deployed for most of the affected services. Transport for London has confirmed that there are no planned disruptions to London Underground services during this time, offering some relief for local travel. However, passengers are strongly advised to check their journeys in advance by visiting the National Rail or specific train operator websites. Leaving extra time for travel is recommended to accommodate potential delays and changes.
Importance of Liverpool Street Station
London Liverpool Street holds the title of the UK's busiest railway station, recording over 98 million entries and exits between 2024 and 2025. This figure surpasses the second busiest station, London Waterloo, by nearly 30 million, highlighting its critical role in the national transport network. The closure underscores the station's heavy usage and the widespread impact of the maintenance works.
Statement from Network Rail
Katie Frost, Network Rail's route director for Anglia, expressed regret over the disruption, stating, "I'm sorry that our work will impact weekend passenger journeys in March. There is never a good time to close the railway, but our planned work will deliver an extensive amount of renewals, repairs, maintenance and surveys on these busy, well-used routes into London Liverpool Street." She emphasised that much of the work requires train services to be halted to ensure staff safety, and the team is maximising the closure period to complete as much essential maintenance as possible.
For a comprehensive breakdown of all closures and detailed travel information, passengers should consult the National Rail website, especially when planning journeys on the affected weekends in March.
