However, passengers across London and the South East are being warned that significant disruption is expected to persist until the end of Wednesday, with widespread cancellations, revisions, and delays of up to an hour affecting key commuter routes.
Multiple Incidents Cause Widespread Chaos
The extensive service issues stem from a combination of "multiple incidents" that have crippled parts of the network. A primary cause was a train derailment near a depot in Selhurst, south-east London. Fortunately, the derailed train was empty at the time, and there have been no confirmed injuries reported. Despite this, the incident has had a cascading effect, preventing other trains from leaving the Selhurst depot and severely limiting available rolling stock.
Signalling System Failure Compounds Problems
Compounding the disruption from the derailment, a separate signalling system fault occurred between London Blackfriars and Norwood Junction. This critical failure has further hampered operations, making it difficult to manage train movements safely and efficiently on these busy lines.
The cumulative impact of these problems has led to severe effects on Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express services. Many trains have been cancelled outright, while others are subject to significant revisions to their schedules. Passengers are experiencing delays of up to 60 minutes, with no immediate return to normal service expected.
