The Formula Two feature race commenced as scheduled on Sunday morning as Formula One organisers race against the clock to beat incoming storms at the Miami Grand Prix. Heavy rain and lightning swept through the Miami area early Sunday, prompting a 'shelter in place' order for attendees already at the Hard Rock Stadium and surrounding circuit. However, the weather cleared sufficiently for the F2 support race to begin after a short delay and two formation laps behind the safety car.
Schedule Change Details
On Saturday evening, officials decided to move forward Sunday's 57-lap F1 race by three hours, with a new start time of 13:00 local time (18:00 BST). This adjustment aims to complete the race before the worst of the afternoon storms arrive. Florida law mandates that events must halt if lightning strikes within an eight-mile radius, a factor that influenced the decision.
Official Statement
An F1 statement explained: "Following discussions between the FIA, FOM (Formula One Management), and the Miami promoter, the decision has been taken to move the start of Sunday's Miami Grand Prix to 13:00 local time due to the weather forecast that is expected to bring heavier rainstorms later in the afternoon close to the original planned race start time. This decision has been taken to ensure the least amount of disruption to the race, and to ensure the maximum possible window to complete the Grand Prix in the best conditions and to prioritise the safety of drivers, fans, teams and staff."
Stakes High for the Event
There is extra urgency to ensure the showpiece event proceeds, as it follows the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix due to the ongoing war in the Middle East. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli will start from pole position, ahead of Max Verstappen.
