Ryanair, the renowned budget airline established in 1985, has publicly identified a frequent and costly error that average passengers consistently make. The Irish carrier, famous for offering Europe's most affordable fares, has sparked considerable debate by pinpointing this common travel blunder.
The Persistent Baggage Oversight
In a recent humorous TikTok video, Ryanair cleverly mocked a widespread issue: passengers attempting to bring oversized suitcases on board. The airline's policy clearly states that all fares include one small personal bag measuring 40cm x 30cm x 20cm, which must fit beneath the seat. This can typically accommodate items like a handbag or laptop case.
Understanding Ryanair's Baggage Rules
Ryanair's official baggage guidelines specify several options beyond the basic allowance. Passengers can purchase Priority boarding, which permits a second cabin bag weighing up to 10kg. Alternatively, checked baggage options include 10kg, 20kg (with a maximum of three bags), or a single 23kg bag. Infants travelling with the airline have no cabin allowance but may bring a 5kg baby bag plus two pieces of baby equipment free of charge.
Despite these clearly communicated regulations, many travellers fail to verify their bag dimensions before arriving at the airport. The TikTok clip featured an animated character hauling a comically large suitcase toward the check-in desk, humorously labelled as the "average Ryanair passenger." A voiceover informed him, "Your bag is too big, sir," followed by a series of typical passenger excuses that Ryanair staff regularly encounter.
Passenger Reactions and Common Excuses
The video showcased familiar complaints such as "it fit at home," "this is unfair," "how could you do this?" and the classic threat, "I'm never flying Ryanair again." This lighthearted content has already attracted nearly 250,000 views and hundreds of comments from engaged social media users.
One observer remarked, "It is like their first time every time! Never ceases to amaze me. It is not as if you don't get enough reminders either as to what you have booked and paid for…" Another user humorously inquired, "What bag should I bring then?????????" while a third shared a personal anecdote: "My uncle does that." Ryanair's official account promptly replied, "He will be charged."
Further comments included sceptical questions about gate fees, with one person asking, "Does paying extra at the gate magically make the bag smaller/lighter?" Another passenger claimed, "At the gate they say that you can carry 2 bags a person though," while someone else joked, "I’ll just travel by unicorn instead."
Ryanair's Global Operations and Fleet
Headquartered in Swords, County Dublin, Ryanair has grown into a global aviation powerhouse. The airline operates approximately 3,500 short-haul flights daily, serving around 230 airports across more than 40 countries throughout Europe, plus destinations in Turkey, Jordan, and Morocco.
With a fleet exceeding 600 aircraft, including 26 leased planes, Ryanair holds the title of the world's largest airline based on international passenger numbers, fleet size, and flight frequency. In terms of market capitalisation, it ranks as the second-largest airline globally, trailing only Delta Air Lines.
Approximately 95% of Ryanair's aircraft are single-aisle Boeing 737s. Notably, the Boeing 737-8-200 model was specifically designed for Ryanair to enable the carrier to transport more passengers while reducing costs per traveller.
