UK Military: Bulk Carrier Attacked Near Strait of Hormuz

The British military's United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center reported on Sunday that a bulk carrier near the Strait of Hormuz was attacked by multiple small craft. The incident occurred off the coast of Sirik, Iran, and all crew members are safe. Vessels have been advised to transit with caution.

This development comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with Iranian officials asserting control over the strait and demanding tolls from ships not affiliated with the United States or Israel. The attack underscores the fragile security situation as diplomatic efforts continue.

Iran's Latest Proposal to the US

Iran has presented a 14-point proposal to the United States, calling for issues to be resolved within 30 days and aiming to end the war rather than extend the ceasefire. The proposal includes demands for the lifting of sanctions, an end to the US naval blockade, withdrawal of forces from the region, and cessation of all hostilities, including Israeli operations in Lebanon.

President Donald Trump expressed doubt about the proposal, stating on social media that Iran has not yet paid a sufficient price for its actions. The US had previously offered a nine-point plan. Iran's reply was sent via Pakistan, which hosted face-to-face talks last month.

Strait of Hormuz and Economic Impact

Iran's grip on the Strait of Hormuz, imposed after the US and Israel launched a war on February 28, has disrupted global markets. Approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and natural gas trade typically passes through the strait. Iran's deputy parliament speaker reiterated that Tehran will not back down from its position, allowing only ships not associated with the US or Israel to pass after paying a toll.

The US has warned shipping companies against paying Iran for safe passage. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Iran has collected less than $1.3 million in tolls, a fraction of its previous daily oil revenues, and that oil storage is rapidly filling up, potentially forcing well shutdowns within a week.

Economic Strain in Iran

Iran's currency continues to weaken, with the dollar trading at 1,840,000 rials on Sunday. Analysts predict further decline. The economy is under severe pressure, with factories not renewing contracts and significant job losses reported. The rial had hit a record low of 1.3 million to the dollar in December, triggering widespread protests.

Yousef Pezeshkian, adviser to President Masoud Pezeshkian, noted that both the US and Iran see themselves as winners and are unwilling to back down.

Nobel Laureate's Health Crisis

The Norwegian Nobel Committee urged Iran to transfer imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi for medical treatment after her health deteriorated sharply. The 2023 laureate fainted twice in prison and was hospitalized. Her lawyers believe she suffered a heart attack in late March.
