A clumsy watch burglar was apprehended by police after they spotted his distinctive neon green T-shirt while he sat in a chip shop, following a dramatic high-speed pursuit. James Wall, aged 20, committed a break-in at a residence in Southborough, Tunbridge Wells, around 5.45pm on December 13, stealing four luxury Gucci and Cartier watches, a diamond ring, and a quantity of foreign currency.
High-Speed Getaway on the M25
Kent Police were alerted shortly after the burglary when Wall verbally abused a witness who questioned his presence in the area. He fled the scene in a silver Vauxhall Insignia. Within an hour, patrols spotted the vehicle speeding along the M25 between Junctions 3 and 2, reaching speeds exceeding 100mph on the hard shoulder.
The pursuit ended near a slip road on the A2 close to Wilmington, where the driver attempted to travel the wrong way on the carriageway. A 38-year-old man was arrested at the scene for driving offences and later released pending further investigation.
Chip Shop Arrest in Bexley
Wall was subsequently arrested by a dog handler after being identified in a neon green T-shirt at a chip shop near Bexley. Bodycam footage released by Kent Police shows the moment of his apprehension, as he was tucking into fish and chips and an energy drink while waiting for staff to charge his phone behind the counter.
Dressed in a navy blue tracksuit, Wall can be seen sitting at a table with his meal. The police officer approaches and asks to inspect his T-shirt, pinching the back to read the label before instructing him to show his hands. Wall is then informed he is under arrest for suspicion of burglary.
Evidence and Sentencing
Wall's phone was seized and subjected to digital forensic analysis, which placed him at the crime scene. Meanwhile, officers from the Roads Policing Unit discovered two jewellery boxes, two false vehicle registration plates, and a jewellery cleaning cloth inside the abandoned car.
Dashcam footage from the M25 chase, recorded at 7.08pm on December 13, shows the police patrol car tailing the silver Vauxhall Insignia at over 70mph on the hard shoulder. Less than a minute later, the squad car reaches speeds between 97 and 101mph in the right-hand lane as it pursues the getaway vehicle.
Wall, from Bristol, Somerset, pleaded guilty to burglary at Maidstone Crown Court on January 12. He was sentenced to two years in prison on March 25. Investigating officer Detective Constable Celia King noted that despite overwhelming evidence, Wall initially refused to accept liability and laughed while watching footage from the pursuit.
The judge considered the high levels of planning involved in the burglary, resulting in an immediate custodial sentence. This case highlights the effectiveness of police diligence and forensic technology in solving crimes, even when suspects attempt to evade capture through reckless driving and hiding in public places.
