The incident occurred in Camden, south-west Sydney, on Saturday morning, claiming the lives of Maureen Crosland, 84, and Lee Casuscelli, 60.
Discrepancy Between Police Statements and Visual Evidence
New South Wales Police had stated publicly that their pursuit of a allegedly stolen red Toyota sedan was called off in Bankstown. However, recently obtained CCTV footage tells a different story. The video, captured by 9News, shows the red Toyota being closely followed by three unmarked police vehicles on Bridgewater Boulevard in Camden Park—a location approximately 40 kilometres from Bankstown—just two minutes before the fatal collision.
The footage clearly depicts the stolen car hitting a dead end before crossing to the wrong side of the road, with the unmarked police cars still in close pursuit. This visual evidence directly challenges Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden's Saturday statement that "there were no police vehicles around this driver" at the time, based on his review of aviation support aircraft footage.

The heartbreaking context of the women's journey has since been revealed by their devastated families. Maureen Crosland and Lee Casuscelli were traveling together to collect Ms. Crosland's granddaughter's wedding dress—the granddaughter is set to marry Ms. Casuscelli's son, making the tragedy particularly poignant for both families.
Phillip Crosland, Maureen's grieving widower, has publicly demanded explanations from police authorities. "If the police called off the pursuit, how come they were there to chase him when he got out of the car?" Mr. Crosland questioned, echoing concerns raised by the CCTV evidence.

The alleged driver, 31-year-old Luke Peter Francis, remains in custody facing eleven charges, including two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death.
