Dog Attack: Nail Technician's Face Partially Eaten in Mauling

Nail Technician Nearly Killed in Horrific Dog Attack That Left Her Face Partially Eaten

A young nail technician from Falkirk, Scotland, was nearly mauled to death after a dog ripped off and ate part of her face during a sudden and unprovoked attack. Samantha Redding, aged 20, was preparing to be picked up from a friend's house in January when the terrifying incident unfolded.

Five-Second Frenzy Leaves Catastrophic Injuries

Samantha, who also works in a supermarket, described how a Spanish Mastiff-Akita that she had known since it was a puppy suddenly lunged at her. 'I was in the house for all of five minutes,' she recalled. 'When my friend texted to say she was outside, I picked my bag, turned around and the dog jumped up off the couch onto its back legs and just latched onto my face. The dog's taller than me when it stands on its back legs.'

The attack lasted only about five seconds but left Samantha with devastating injuries. The beast nearly tore off her entire top lip and swallowed a portion of her facial tissue. 'It didn't just rip off a bit of my face, it actually ate it and swallowed it,' she said. Samantha also sustained a bite mark on her arm from trying to fend off the animal.

Emergency Response and Multiple Surgeries

After glancing in a hallway mirror and seeing that 'half her face was gone,' Samantha sprinted from the house and headed to hospital. She was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow for emergency surgery in a desperate attempt to reconnect her shredded skin.

Her medical treatment has been extensive and ongoing:

  • She underwent a 12-hour operation that included a tracheostomy to support her breathing.
  • Reconstructive surgery was performed using skin grafts taken from her arm and leg to rebuild her face.
  • Doctors worked to reconnect nerves and blood vessels during the complex procedures.
  • Samantha spent a full month in hospital recovering from the injuries.

Further surgeries will be required in the future to restore full function to her face, and she acknowledges that she will be scarred for life.

Psychological Trauma and Quest for Justice

The ordeal has taken a severe psychological toll on Samantha. 'I've been really struggling, I've not wanted to do anything,' she admitted. 'When I have been out recently, I feel like everyone's staring at me. I still can't open my mouth fully.'

She also experiences flashbacks and anxiety around dogs, including her own cavapoo. 'Sometimes when I tilt my head a wee bit, all I can see is that dog coming towards me,' she said.

Reflecting on the attack, Samantha noted that doctors told her she was fortunate. 'They said I was lucky because if that was even 1cm down, that could've been my neck and could've been a completely different story. I could've died.'

Her emotions have ranged from initial upset to rage. 'It's been the hardest time of my life,' she stated. 'I want justice, I don't want this to happen to anyone else.'

Legal Proceedings and Community Support

In response to the incident, a 38-year-old man has been arrested and charged under the Dangerous Dog Act 1991, along with an outstanding warrant. He appeared at Falkirk Sheriff Court on Monday, 23 February, 2026, on a solemn matter, made no plea, and was bailed for further examination. No further hearing dates have been set at this time.

A fundraiser has been launched to support Samantha through her ongoing medical care and recovery as she works to rebuild her life following this traumatic event.
