Drunken Passenger Causes Mid-Air Disturbance on Flight to Bristol

A 61-year-old man has been convicted after a disruptive drunken episode on a commercial flight approaching Bristol Airport, leading to his arrest upon landing and subsequent court proceedings. Stephen Blofield, from Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire, admitted to four charges related to the incident, which occurred in November last year, after consuming double measures of alcohol at an airport bar in Krakow, Poland.

Chaotic Behaviour During Final Approach

As the Boeing 737 aircraft began its final descent into Bristol Airport, Blofield became increasingly intoxicated and abusive, alarming both fellow holidaymakers and the flight crew. Witnesses described him as loud, volatile, and repeatedly swearing, with multiple passengers recording the disturbance on their mobile phones due to visible fear in the cabin.

During the flight, Blofield screamed at other passengers, declaring, "I'm savage, I drink JD," in reference to Jack Daniel's whiskey. When cabin crew members attempted to intervene and instruct him to sit down, he defiantly responded, "You can't tell me what to do, I'm English," further escalating the situation.

Ignoring Pilot Commands and Police Intervention

The pilot issued a lawful demand for Blofield to remain seated to ensure the safety of the aircraft, but this was ignored, endangering the secure operations of the plane. Upon landing at Bristol Airport, police officers boarded the aircraft to address the ongoing disturbance.

Body-worn camera footage captured Blofield continuing his aggressive behaviour, with officers noting his glazed red eyes and strong smell of alcohol. He reportedly called an officer offensive names and had to be physically restrained during the arrest process.

Court Proceedings and Guilty Plea

At North Somerset Magistrates Court, Blofield pleaded guilty to all four charges brought against him. The charges included entering an aircraft while drunk, failing to obey the lawful commands of the pilot for aircraft safety, behaving in a threatening or abusive manner towards a member of the aircraft crew, and using threatening or abusive words likely to cause harassment, alarm, or distress to other passengers.

Prosecutor Michael Collins stated that the incident caused widespread alarm and that Blofield's actions compromised the safety of the flight. In court, Blofield expressed that he was "ashamed, embarrassed and accepted his behaviour," acknowledging his intoxication during the event.

Sentencing and Health Considerations

The defence requested a pre-sentence report due to Blofield's significant health conditions, which probation services need to investigate further. He has been released on unconditional bail and is scheduled to appear at Bristol Crown Court for sentencing on April 7, where the full consequences of his actions will be determined.

This case highlights ongoing concerns about passenger behaviour and aviation safety, particularly involving alcohol consumption before or during flights. Authorities continue to emphasise the importance of compliance with crew instructions to prevent such dangerous incidents in the future.
