Police Launch Fresh Appeal 30 Years After Melanie Hall's Murder
Avon and Somerset Police have launched a new public appeal for information regarding the murder of university graduate Melanie Hall, almost three decades after her disappearance. The 25-year-old hospital clerical worker was last seen at Cadillacs nightclub in Bath during the early hours of June 9, 1996, following an evening out with friends and her boyfriend.
Decades-Long Investigation
Detective Chief Inspector Ben Lavender, who is leading the investigation, described the case as one of the longest-running and highest-profile investigations ever conducted by the force. Hundreds of officers have worked on the case over the years, with the discovery of Miss Hall's remains on October 5, 2009, near the northbound slip road at junction 14 of the M5 motorway marking a pivotal moment.
"Melanie's family has endured unimaginable pain and uncertainty for almost three decades and have shown extraordinary strength and resilience throughout this time," Mr Lavender stated. "Everything we do is driven by the need to provide them with the justice and answers they so desperately need."
Final Sighting and Key Questions
The last confirmed sighting of Melanie Hall was at approximately 1:10 am on Sunday, June 9, 1996, when her friends departed Cadillacs nightclub on Walcot Street. She was seated alone beside the dancefloor. Police believe there is a strong possibility she left the venue with her killer, as a coat she had checked into the cloakroom was later collected.
Investigators are urging the public to reflect on that weekend, noting that England was playing Switzerland in the opening game of the Euros, and Bath city centre was exceptionally busy. "Did you go to Cadillacs nightclub? Did you see Melanie that night? Has anyone spoken to you about that night and raised any concerns or suspicions?" Mr Lavender questioned.
Unresolved Evidence and Reward
Miss Hall's clothing and personal items have never been recovered. These include a pale blue silk dress, black suede mule shoes, a cream single-breasted long-sleeved jacket, a black satchel-type handbag, cosmetics, a Midland chequebook and bank card, a Next watch with an expanding bracelet, and silver drop earrings.
The location where her remains were found remains a key focus, with police keeping an open mind about when her body was dumped there. "Did you see a car parked on the slip road, near to where it joins the M5 in the early hours of Sunday June 9, or in the days or weeks after this?" Mr Lavender asked.
Crimestoppers has offered a reward of up to £20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. Detective Chief Inspector Ben Lavender will make the appeal on BBC One's Crimewatch Live, which will also feature an interview with Miss Hall's father, Steve, and sister, Dominique.
