Tragic Accident Claims Life of Georgia Grandfather on Rainy Highway
A devastating incident unfolded on a Georgia highway when a grandfather attempting to help his teenage grandson after a car breakdown was struck and killed by an ambulance. The collision occurred near the intersection of Atlanta Highway and Whitehead Road, leaving the family and community in mourning.
Details of the Fatal Collision
John Martin, aged 66, was dragged under the ambulance after the emergency vehicle struck both him and his 17-year-old grandson, Conner. According to reports from WSB-TV, the Northeast Georgia Medical Center ambulance initially hit Conner's disabled car, pinning both individuals. Witness Jennifer Wise described the harrowing scene, noting the rainy and foggy conditions that likely contributed to the tragedy.
'There was a body under the ambulance,' Wise recounted. 'I saw the EMT driver open his door and the look on his face was just utter shock.' The Georgia State Patrol confirmed the sequence of events, highlighting the severe weather as a factor in the accident.
Family's Heartbreak and Recovery
Conner survived the crash and is currently receiving treatment at an Atlanta children's hospital. He sustained multiple injuries, including lacerations, internal bleeding, and a broken clavicle. Following a three-and-a-half-hour surgery, his mother, Jennifer Martinez, reported that he is showing signs of improvement.
Martinez, who is both Martin's daughter and Conner's mother, expressed profound grief over the loss of her father. 'He was a good papa and a great dad,' she said. 'He loved hunting and fishing and he would help anybody. It doesn't matter what time, where, how much. He was always there.' She described Martin as a kind, funny man with a big heart, deeply missed by all who knew him.
Community Support and Investigation
As Conner continues his recovery, friends and family are rallying around him. Mady Morrow, a coworker of Conner's, shared her support: 'It was all just really sad to hear. I'm there rooting for him and my whole family is as well. We love him like a son.' The Northeast Georgia Health System issued a statement extending condolences to everyone affected and confirming cooperation with the ongoing accident investigation.
'Our hearts go out to everyone involved in the accident and their loved ones,' a spokesperson said. 'We are cooperating with the accident investigation and providing mental and emotional support to staff members who have been impacted.' The Georgia State Patrol has indicated that charges are pending against the EMT driver involved in the crash, with the investigation focusing on the circumstances under the adverse weather conditions.
