Melbourne Man Faces Machete Threat After Horrific High-Speed Crash
A young Australian man, who survived a devastating 180km/h collision in Melbourne's west, has shared the harrowing moment he was allegedly threatened with a machete as he attempted to assist a teenager thrown to his death from an allegedly stolen vehicle. Tony, 23, had just dropped his girlfriend off at her home in Caroline Springs on Thursday night when the incident unfolded on Derrimut Road in Hoppers Crossing.
Chaotic Scene Unfolds After Alleged Carjacking Attempt
According to police reports, a teenage gang had first tried to carjack a Toyota sedan before pursuing it in a Skoda and ramming into its rear. The Skoda then allegedly collided with Tony's Ford Falcon XR6, causing his car to spin off the road and leaving him with whiplash and suspected broken ribs. The Skoda, allegedly carrying seven youths, subsequently struck a Ford Ranger before rolling over and coming to rest in the front yard of a nearby residence.
During the rollover, a 15-year-old boy, identified locally as Robbie, was ejected through the windscreen and died at the scene. Tony described the terrifying speed of the impact, stating, 'He was allegedly doing about 180km/h. My car went airborne. I don't know how I'm alive.'
Machete Threat Halts Rescue Effort
Despite his own injuries, Tony rushed to help the injured teen but was allegedly confronted by a youth wielding a machete emerging from the wreckage. 'I walked towards the deceased to help,' he recalled. 'There was a girl sitting next to him screaming for an ambulance as the driver emerged from the wreckage. Then a neighbour yelled out: "Machete!" I was still walking towards him. I thought, "I'm not going to die today." So I walked the other way. The driver hasn't even looked backwards. He just ran.' Police later allegedly recovered a sword near the scene.
Emotional and Financial Fallout for Victim
Tony's mother, Anna, a single mum from Melbourne's west, expressed the family's ongoing trauma. 'He's got whiplash and suspected broken ribs from the seatbelt,' she said. 'He hasn't slept since. Doctors gave him sleeping tablets and they're not even working. He's traumatised. He can't even handle the sound of a horn beeping now.' The crash has also led to significant financial hardship. Tony's car, valued at approximately $7,500, was a write-off and uninsured due to a bizarre bushfire embargo mistakenly applied by an insurance company. Additionally, Tony has lost his job at Melbourne Airport's cargo area because he lacks transport and is too shaken to drive.
Community Grieves as Legal Proceedings Begin
As Robbie lay dead at the scene, the driver and other passengers allegedly fled towards the nearby Pacific Werribee shopping centre. Police found bottles of tequila and alcoholic cocktails at the crash site. The driver, who is due to appear in a Children's Court, has been charged with culpable driving causing death and other traffic offences, and was remanded in custody. Anna voiced her hopes for justice, saying, 'My hope is that he just gets charged as an adult.' The family has been left emotionally shattered, with Anna adding, 'No mother deserves to bury her child. But it could have been my son lying there. He was just doing the right thing, dropping his girlfriend home.'
Outpouring of Grief and Calls for Action
The community has responded with an outpouring of grief, with floral tributes erected at the crash site and social media flooded with memories of Robbie. Notably, Robbie had previously posted tributes for a friend who died in a similar tragedy less than a year earlier. Tony and Anna have a blunt message for authorities, arguing that lenient penalties fail to address the severity of such crimes. 'These kids are acting like adults, driving underage, drinking underage,' Anna stated. 'Police and emergency services put in hours, ambulances, helicopters - all those resources - and then they get a slap on the wrist. It's not right.' The family is currently focusing on Tony's health and counselling before considering a GoFundMe campaign.
Ongoing Police Investigation
Police continue to investigate the incident, with a 16-year-old girl from the Wyndham area sustaining serious injuries and remaining in hospital. Another 16-year-old girl from the same area was arrested at the scene and released pending further investigation. A 14-year-old boy from Wyndham later presented to a nearby hospital, where he was arrested on unrelated matters and remanded in custody. Authorities are still working to identify two other occupants of the Skoda who fled the scene. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
