A 40-year-old man has admitted to the murder of a university student who was seventeen years his junior, following the conclusion of their brief romantic involvement. Adedapo Adegbola confessed to fatally stabbing Steph Irons, aged 23, after arriving at her residence in Mapperley, Nottinghamshire, on the evening of Tuesday, October 21st last year.
Police Investigation Reveals Motive and Evidence
According to police statements, Adegbola, a former work colleague of Miss Irons, was driven to commit the act after their short-lived relationship came to an end. Following the attack, he fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of incriminating evidence that included blood-stained trainers and a jumper on the streets of Mapperley and Carlton.
Extensive Manhunt and Surrender
Adegbola then embarked on a journey across multiple locations, travelling to Mansfield, Worksop, Sheffield, and finally Hull, before returning to Nottingham the following day. Upon his return, he voluntarily surrendered himself to authorities at Oxclose Police Station, where he was promptly arrested on suspicion of murder.
Officers were initially alerted to Miss Irons' home by concerned co-workers who had received a series of troubling messages on the evening of the assault. Emergency services discovered Miss Irons with severe wounds in her living room, and she was pronounced dead at the scene shortly thereafter.
Family Tributes and Legal Proceedings
In a heartfelt statement, Miss Irons' family described her as a beautiful, loving, and caring daughter who harboured ambitions of becoming a psychologist. They highlighted her infectious smile and compassionate nature, noting that she had already obtained both a degree and a master's in clinical psychology and was on the verge of applying for her doctorate.
During police interviews, Adegbola opted to remain silent, providing no comments in response to questioning. However, investigators meticulously gathered a substantial body of evidence, including CCTV footage, digital data, and witness testimonies, which meticulously tracked the defendant's movements before, during, and after the incident.
Court Hearing and Sentencing
At a brief hearing held at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday, Adegbola entered a guilty plea to the charge of murder. He is scheduled to be sentenced next month, with Judge Nirmal Shant KC indicating that he faces a mandatory life sentence, with the only remaining question being the determination of the minimum term to be served.
Members of Miss Irons' family were present in court to witness the guilty plea. Detective Inspector Stuart Barson, the lead investigator on the case, remarked afterwards that this was a tragic case in which a caring and compassionate young woman was taken away in horrific circumstances.

Detective Inspector Barson further noted that following the attack, Adegbola made no attempt to call for an ambulance and was solely focused on escaping the scene and disposing of crucial evidence. Although he initially turned himself in, his subsequent refusal to cooperate during interviews did not hinder the investigation.
The evidence compiled against him, though, has left the defendant with no choice but to plead guilty today, stated Barson.
