Militants Kill 10 Nigerian Security Forces and Civilian in Kebbi

Authorities in northern Nigeria have reported a deadly ambush by armed militants targeting security forces in the northwestern state of Kebbi. The attack resulted in the fatalities of nine soldiers, one police officer, and a resident, with several other soldiers sustaining injuries.

Details of the Ambush

According to Yahaya Sarki, a spokesman for the Kebbi state government, the militants struck late Tuesday in the Shanga council area. The security forces were being deployed to respond to warnings about a pending attack when they were ambushed in the village of Giron Masa.

Sarki shared photographs showing burned vehicles along a dusty road surrounded by forests, illustrating the severity of the assault. The incident underscores the volatile security situation in this remote region.

Government Response and Condolences

Kebbi Governor Nasir Idris visited the injured soldiers at a local hospital, expressing deep sorrow over the attack. He emphasized the significant loss and pledged government support for the families of those killed.

"Those that lost their lives, the government of Kebbi state will do everything to assist the families," Governor Idris stated, highlighting the state's commitment to aiding victims amid ongoing violence.

Context of Regional Violence

This ambush is the latest in a series of violent incidents plaguing Nigeria's conflict-battered northwest. Armed groups frequently target security forces and isolated communities in areas with limited state presence and security infrastructure.

No group has immediately claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attack. However, some local residents suspect the involvement of the Islamic State Sahel Province (ISSP), known locally as Lakurawa. This group has recently intensified its lethal activities in states like Kebbi and Sokoto, located along the porous border with Niger Republic.

Historical and International Dimensions

Lakurawa was the target of a U.S. military strike in Nigeria in December, conducted in collaboration with Nigerian forces. This intervention followed allegations by former U.S. President Donald Trump that Christians were being targeted in killings within Nigeria.

The Nigerian military has previously noted that Lakurawa has roots in neighboring Niger. The group's increased activity in Nigeria's border communities is linked to a 2023 military coup in Niger, which strained relations between the two countries and created security vulnerabilities.

The ongoing violence in Kebbi and surrounding areas reflects broader challenges in combating militant groups in Nigeria's northwest, where limited governance and cross-border dynamics exacerbate security risks for both security personnel and civilians.
