In a deeply distressing case that has shocked the community, a 50-year-old mother in France has confessed to freezing two newborn babies immediately after giving birth. The horrifying incidents came to light in the village of Aillevillers-et-Lyaumont, located in the Haute-Saône department within the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region.
Discovery and Confession
The Besançon public prosecutor's office has launched a full judicial inquiry into the alleged murder of minors under the age of fifteen. Prosecutor Cédric Logelin confirmed on Thursday that the woman made the admission while in police custody, detailing events that she claimed occurred between the birth of her last child in 2011 and her return to work in 2018.
According to the magistrate, the woman stated she gave birth to the babies at home, wrapped the newborns immediately after delivery, and placed them in the freezer located in the laundry room of the house. The bodies were discovered by a family member who was sorting through the freezer, which had only been used by the mother.
Disturbing Details Emerge
Once police were informed of the initial discovery, they found another body in the freezer wrapped in a bag. The woman was subsequently arrested at approximately 1 a.m. on Wednesday in Boulogne-Billancourt. During interviews, she reportedly cried regularly and expressed sorrow for her children and family.
The woman explained that she had hidden her pregnancies from friends and family by wearing loose-fitting clothes and fabricating explanations when questions were raised about her weight. Magistrate Christine de Curraize noted that the pregnancies occurred from 2011 to 2018.
Family Background and Investigation
It was further reported that the woman has a total of nine children by three different fathers. She vacated her home suddenly in December, with her four youngest children and their father, along with another one of her children, remaining behind. Her partner, who was also taken into custody, claimed he was completely unaware of these pregnancies and was taken by surprise. At present, he is not facing any charges.
An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, and the case has been assigned to the Besançon public prosecutor's office. The office has requested that the woman, who is being prosecuted for crimes that could lead to life imprisonment, be remanded in custody.
Community Reaction
According to French newspaper L'Est Républicain, a local resident, who recalled that a murder had previously taken place in Aillevillers in 2014, sighed and suggested that it was a cursed village. The case has sent shockwaves through the small community and beyond, raising questions about mental health and support systems.
The investigation continues as authorities work to uncover all the facts surrounding this tragic and unsettling case, which highlights the extreme measures taken to conceal pregnancies and the devastating consequences that followed.
