Jamie Laing's Emotional Account of Son's Birth on Good Morning Britain
Reality television personality Jamie Laing became visibly emotional during a recent appearance on ITV's Good Morning Britain, where he recounted the dramatic birth of his son Ziggy and paid heartfelt tribute to his wife Sophie Habboo. The 37-year-old star appeared on Monday's episode alongside hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls to discuss his new Disney+ reality series Raising Chelsea.
The Unexpected Birth Footage
During the interview, Laing revealed that the couple had initially decided against filming Ziggy's birth for their television show, considering it too private and intimate. "We were like, we're not going to let the cameras in, we don't want to do that to the actual birth," Laing explained. However, their plans changed dramatically when Sophie required an emergency cesarean section in December 2025.
"It was really scary, yeah," Laing admitted. "I salute all women, birth is wild. Let alone going through an emergency C-section." The reality star described being in tears throughout the procedure, overwhelmed by the intensity of the moment.
The Anaesthetist's Secret Recording
In a surprising turn of events, the couple's anaesthetist secretly recorded the entire birth using their phone without their knowledge. "This wonderful person picked up our phone and filmed the whole thing, without us knowing, because she wanted it for our memories," Laing revealed. When the couple later discovered the footage while reviewing their photos, Sophie had a change of heart about sharing the moment publicly.
"Sophie was like 'Well this is pretty special, so we're going to put it on the show,'" Laing told the hosts. He emphasized the authenticity of the footage, noting that since neither he nor Sophie knew they were being filmed, the moment captured was completely raw and genuine.
Sophie Habboo's 'Rock Star' Performance
Laing repeatedly praised his wife's composure during the challenging birth. "Sophie was just a rockstar," he declared. "Sophie, just women are so much cooler than men. There's no way I would say 'Right everyone stop. I'm not doing this. This is too much.'"
The couple, who married in 2023, have been navigating the complexities of parenting while maintaining their public personas. Their Disney+ series follows their journey through pregnancy and early parenthood, offering what they describe as a "no-holds-barred and authentic account" of their lives.
Privacy Concerns and Social Media Dilemmas
The interview also touched on the couple's ongoing debate about their son's privacy. Thus far, Jamie and Sophie have refrained from showing Ziggy's face on social media, sharing only photos of the back of his head or carefully obscured images. However, their television show presented new challenges.
"We're in a complicated place with social media and kids," Laing confessed. "I don't know where social media is going to go. Like what happens if they suddenly turn 10 years old, and everyone hates social media and they go, 'Why do you put me on that?'"
Sophie had initially wanted to keep Ziggy completely off both social media and their television show, but the situation has become "a bit complicated" according to the couple. They explained that as producers of their Disney+ series, they maintain control over what is shown, which helped ease some of their concerns.
The Scary Complications
Laing described the birth complications as "the scariest thing I have ever been through in my entire life." After arriving at the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital - where Kate Middleton welcomed her children - medical staff discovered that their son's arm was through Sophie's cervix, necessitating the emergency C-section.
"Watching your wife go through that, the person you love, and this baby, and you have no control," Laing recalled. "It was the most terrifying thing ever. Nothing can prepare you for that."
Sophie added her perspective: "The complications were really scary. Obviously, it wasn't the birth I planned or necessarily wanted, it was scary, but birth is different for every woman and however you do it is incredible and he's here and he's healthy."
Documenting Their Journey
Despite the challenges, both Jamie and Sophie expressed gratitude for having documented their pregnancy and birth journey. Laing explained that he has always been passionate about authentic storytelling, having filmed everything since childhood. "I love the idea of sharing true stories and real stories; that's what I really like," he said.
Sophie admitted to initial reservations about the constant filming during her pregnancy. "I have never craved privacy more than I did when I was pregnant which was really crazy because then I was filming a TV show," she confessed. However, looking back, she now appreciates having captured those precious moments.
The emotional interview concluded with Laing reflecting on the unexpected beauty of the secretly recorded birth footage. "What's incredible about that moment, Sophie and I didn't know it was being filmed," he said. "Watching it I was like, 'oh my God, Soph, look how in love we are, you're seeing it from an outside perspective.'"
