Five off-duty female police officers were reportedly "letting their hair down" when they became embroiled in a violent altercation with a mother and her three daughters at a bottomless brunch event, a court was informed today. The incident, which unfolded at the Cocktail Club on Shaftesbury Avenue, allegedly involved kicking, punching, and hair-pulling.
Allegations of Excessive Force During Brunch
Rose Webb, aged 58, along with Casey Jackson, 32, Emma Dee Jackson, 34, and Billie Jo Jackson, 35, are accused of engaging in a physical confrontation that prosecutors describe as going "over the top." The officers, who serve in the Metropolitan Police's Territorial Support Group (TSG), were attending a "High School Musical"-themed brunch, where they consumed Prosecco, ate pizza, and sang along to the song "We're All In This Together."
Trigger of the Conflict
According to testimony presented at Wood Green Crown Court, the two groups were dancing in close proximity when Webb allegedly became irritated by the dancing style of PC Tanisha Whitlock. Webb is said to have shouted derogatory language at PC Whitlock, including the phrase "f**king lezza," which escalated the situation. This prompted colleagues Daniella Andrean, Binal Valji, Megan Pearson, and Bethan Thomas to become involved in the ensuing struggle.
Prosecution's Closing Arguments
In his closing speech, prosecutor Alex Balancy urged jurors to examine CCTV footage of the incident to determine the aggressor and whether the force used was reasonable. He emphasized that the police officers should not be faulted for "dancing silly" or enjoying themselves socially. Balancy posed critical questions about the proportionality of the response, asking, "What is it that Ms Whitlock did that was so bad that she had to have her hair pulled by Ms Webb and she would not simply let go?"
He further argued that the conduct of the defendants, taken collectively, would likely cause fear to a hypothetical bystander. Balancy characterized the incident as an affray driven by excessive alcohol consumption and a readiness to fight, rather than self-defense. He noted that PC Whitlock did not retaliate physically throughout the altercation, despite experiencing flashbacks from the verbal abuse and physical assault.
Defendants' Backgrounds and Denials
All four defendants—Webb, Casey Jackson, Emma Dee Jackson, and Billie Jo Jackson, all residents of Northolt in west London—have pleaded not guilty to the charge of affray. Billie Jo Jackson is employed in water safety at Hammersmith Hospital, while Casey Jackson works for a property firm catering to celebrity and high-profile clients. Webb holds a managerial position in a business. The trial is ongoing, with the defendants opting not to provide evidence in their defense during cross-examination.
