Rapper's Diabetes Crisis in Custody Triggers Legal Dispute
Atlanta-based rapper OJ da Juiceman, whose legal name is Otis Whitfield Williams Jr., experienced a severe medical emergency related to his Type 1 diabetes while detained in DeKalb County, Georgia, according to statements from his representatives. The 44-year-old artist required urgent treatment at Grady Memorial Hospital on March 21, just days after his arrest on March 15 by the Georgia State Patrol.
Arrest and Allegations
Court records from DeKalb County Superior Court indicate that OJ da Juiceman faces ten charges, including aggravated assault upon a public safety officer. The incident allegedly occurred on January 28, when a trooper reported that a grey Nissan sedan sped past on I-20 East and the driver displayed a firearm. The trooper's report claims the driver aimed a black handgun through the passenger window during the pursuit, though emergency lights were not activated to maintain pursuit speed.
Vehicle registration checks identified OJ da Juiceman as the renter, and the trooper noted a resemblance to the individual seen driving. However, a witness has provided a sworn affidavit stating the rapper was not operating the vehicle at the time, explaining he had rented the car for her but allowed another person to drive it.
Health and Legal Repercussions
Representatives for the musician have strongly criticized the handling of his custody, asserting that his health and safety were compromised. They told TMZ that the situation has caused significant professional and financial damage, including missed performances and disruptions to the release of his latest project, R&B Juice 2, a collaboration with Chester and Zaytoven.
In response to the charges, OJ da Juiceman's team has denied all allegations, emphasizing his respect for the law and claiming that authorities are aware of the true perpetrator. They have warned of potential legal action if the matter is not resolved promptly, stating they are prepared to pursue all available remedies to protect his rights.
Legal Defense and Next Steps
Attorney Terrell Dark, representing OJ da Juiceman, expressed confidence in his client's innocence and the legal strategy moving forward. In a statement to WSB, Dark said, "We will continue to pursue all appropriate remedies to secure his release and expect that, upon proper consideration of the evidence, Mr. Williams Jr. will be fully vindicated."
The rapper remains in custody at DeKalb County Jail, with a bond hearing scheduled for April 2. As the case unfolds, the intersection of his medical emergency and the serious charges against him continues to draw attention, highlighting concerns over detainee welfare and legal accountability in high-profile arrests.
