Police Sergeant Dies After Being Hit at Christmas Parade

A retired police sergeant has died after being struck by a vehicle while volunteering at a family Christmas parade in the United States.

A Joyous Event Turns to Tragedy

The incident occurred around 7:20 pm on Saturday in the city of Cumming, Georgia, approximately 45 minutes from Atlanta. Robert Muth was directing traffic for the festive event when he was hit. What had been a cheerful scene filled with families watching Santa Claus pass by on a firetruck quickly descended into darkness.

Other deputies and volunteers rushed to Mr Muth's aid, administering immediate life-saving efforts. The father and grandfather was transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following morning surrounded by his family.

A Lifetime of Service Remembered

Robert Muth was a veteran law enforcement officer with a distinguished 21-year career. He served with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and was also a retired sergeant from the Boca Raton Police Department in Florida.

Even after retiring, his commitment to public service continued. He worked as a bluecoat security officer for the sheriff's office from January 2002 to April 2024, before becoming a dedicated volunteer. He assisted the Citizens Helping in Policing (CHIP) Unit and the Criminal Investigation Division.

In an emotional tribute, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office stated Muth had "selflessly provided countless volunteer hours in service to the Sheriff’s Office and the community he lived in." The agency added, "His dedication, professionalism, and willingness to serve wherever needed exemplified the very best of our volunteer program."

Investigation Underway and Community Mourns

The driver involved in the crash remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. The Cumming Police Department confirmed that the cause of the fatal collision remains unclear and any potential charges are pending investigation.

The community's grief has been palpable on social media, where friends and colleagues shared fond memories. One person wrote, "Rob was one of a kind. A true gentleman and friend. I will miss him so much," while another offered "So many prayers to the Muth family."

In a final tribute, the sheriff's office announced that a procession would escort Mr Muth's body back to Cumming. The procession is scheduled to pause at the courthouse where he served as a security guard, allowing deputies to salute their friend before he is taken to the funeral home.
